Indie Devs Still Suffering from Abused Microsoft Ratings

Wow. Now I'm gonna go rate it. Gotta counteract that.

Extra Punctuation: Roleplaying Homosexual in Dragon Age 2

    I like this article.

    Controller Evolution

This column gave me two connected thoughts afterward: First, I thought back to the first time I picked up a game with a thumbstick. It was Mario 64 on the first level at a Toys R Us. There's that tilty bridge that leads up to where the cannon and Chain Chomp are and I had no ability to get...

    Most disturbing/unforgettable moment in gaming.

Does anybody remember Stroggification in Quake 4? That was one of the most visceral experiences I've ever had in a game, and that game is not exactly a masterpiece in my mind.

Any game you had, or lost, or broken, and wish you had back...

Ogre Battle 64. I heard back in the day that the game was legendary but really hard to find. A family friend stumbled across a copy in a pawn shop and I was stoked. But I never beat it cuz I got it right before I bought a Gamecube. Now I have no idea where the cartridge is...

Question of the Day, October 4, 2010

This is exactly what I was coming in to write. I voted other. Nothing makes me more irritated than when a videogame feels repetitive. I mean, games are meant to be played over and over again. If I feel like I'm just completing a laundry list of tasks before I've even finished for the first time...

When I was a kid, I got mocked daily for reading books all the time and being chubby. When puberty started to kick in, I realized I had few friends, I was socially awkward, and girls were not interested in me. That was a drag. I played the video games, read the "genres" and generally made myself...

GayGamer.net has a lot to answer for

I would guess that the original comment regarding "gay space marines" had to do with the inherent homoeroticism that is often found between the hyper masculine marine characters. In the process of establishing military camaraderie between their characters, many games just sort of make them seem...

    Zero Punctuation: Mafia II

Awwww yeah...assonance joke at the end. You just don't see enough attention paid to assonance any more. Everyone's all like "ooh alliteration and rhyme, that's all we need."

At first I couldn't relate to this guy, but then I projected it onto a real life experience and realized how arbitrary some of our goals can be when trying to prove something to somebody (and oneself). Just because it was in a video game, doesn't mean that not meeting this goal for his friend...

Zero Punctuation: Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

This was a perfect target for him: a "AAA" title that is everything he hates in videogames and seriously makes everyone dumber for playing it. I was smiling just from hearing how much he deeply hated it in his voice. He definitely hasn't had one of those in a few reviews.

Trolls, Haters and Flame War Generals? Thank You

I wonder if this sort of research led to the (quite appropriate) statement of the Duke Nukem developer talked about in this article... [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/8071-PAX-2010-Hands-On-Duke-Nukem-Forever] Another interesting look into the minds...

The negative public/mass media perception is what fuels this drive to single out video games from other forms of media. We may soon have a video game case tried in the US Supreme Court that could put into law this misunderstanding about video games. Imagine if that had happened during the...

Do you try to hide your geeky inclinations?

I used to hide some of my geekier proclivities in high school as I had to associate with a lot of people not interested in that sort of thing, but in college I started to express the extent to which I had a nerdy streak more openly. By now, as a recent graduate and supposed "adult" I just don't...

Smile and Nod: RealID and Why Hate Speech is the Least of Our Worries

I found this article actually rather endearingly heartfelt. It even made me re-evaluate my opinion on the sad souls who place so much value on their virtual lives. This is the kind of thing that makes me read the Escapist.
