Yep. It extended the time until they ran out of water, but decreased the time before the Supermutants found the Vault and killed them.

The game was full of cutscenes. Cutscenes where you had to play a rhythym game or they ended prematurely.

That's probably why the game doesn't normally work that way, Quack. They probably decided that it would suck too much, so they nerfed crippling to its current "just have a little nap and your bullet-perforated femur will be right as rain!" format. :)
