If I do downgrade to a 7870 I can save myself about 50$, which I would really like (Who wouldn't?). But what am I sacrificing if I do? And by games running smoothly are we talking on High? Med? Or hell even some on Ultra?

Really? These disgusting casuals don't deserve to play how they want! Also: The only real issue I could see an "easy" mode affecting game-play would be something around the lines of Dark Souls. Where a lot of the challenge is from the gameplay.
