Can't remember ever not being into gaming, but Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was probably my first. Other than that, the original Tomb Raider piqued my interest in consoles. Honourable mentions to Timesplitters 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 as well.

My dad did the same thing with CoD2 a few years ago. My local Blockbusters has a disc cleaning machine- it was able to polish the surface down quite a long way to completely get rid of a really deep scratched groove. Worked like new afterwards, only cost a couple of pounds.
