I agree with OP completely. Everything you said is why I didn't like Demon's Souls. I even knew that it was exactly how it was going to be, but it's different when you're actually playing it and realize how tedious it is.

Those are some great games you listed. I recently played PS:T for the first time and loved it for the story and characters. Definitely also try Diablo 2 if you haven't; it's a fantastic game albeit very different from the games you listed.
