Hmm...My heart would have to go out to the Serious bomb in Serious Sam. Yeah, you can technically find several of them throughout the campaign but they were rare enough that I only ever found 1 in a playthough, and usually that's all I ever needed.

As far as short RPGs go, there's Half Minute Hero on PSP. It's my personal favorite game to just pop in and play for a little while. If your looking for old school, I've always stuck to Earthbound, (I've finished it within 10 hours). If nostalgia isn't your thing, the Golden Sun series...
