This. I did exactly the same thing, and even though the game made it seem I had taken the morally wrong choice, I couldn't bring myself to side with the rebellion after finding out what was needed.
Dark Forces was great, I remember playing it when it first came out on my Packard Bell with a 486 processor. The missions were pretty fun but the boss fights were an exercise in running away and hoping you had enough mines for the baddy to run over.
