This is true. FTL is so annoying because you can get completely curbstomped at any point unless you have the right upgrades which may or may not show up randomly at shops. In XCOM EU, the game could simply not give you abduction missions in high panic countries, which is the only way to stop...

There's a Skyrim mod called Vilja. She can spar with you, find quests, has a huge range of situational dialogue and actually had a moral personality where she will dynamically agree or disagree with your actions, among other things.

I think there is a bit of similarity, in that there are elements of society that still consider 'nerd' to be insulting. In response, a lot of 'nerds' own the label and take pride in their outside status. So i can kinda see how nerd and hipster can overlap naturally.
