I'm really sorry for your loss. My mother is turning 70 the day after tomorrow and her health is quite poor, so I have this staring me in the face. When I lost one of my best friends, I found prayer really helped and was a comfort.
Why in the world would I even need to know he/she is gay? It's one of my main beefs with the whole "gays are a minority" stance. Why should you be given special status because of what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom. I don't need to know, don't want to know.
