Maybe Star Legions - 1992. Mars is the opening theme song. I've never played it but it looks like ships scan the surface of the planets before doing anything.

Were all of the puzzles science related and focused on education? If not maybe it was a regular adventure game released around that time. Could it have been one of the Myst games? They have all sorts of puzzles and I could see a school having one of them.

Do you remember if it was cartoony like Monkey Island or more realistic like The Riddle of Master Lu? Also was it an adventure game or just mini games? Also was it on mac or pc?

It might be one of the old warcraft games. They were also made by blizzard and were very similar.

As far as the strategy game goes, if it was only ten or so years ago, the only game I can think of that matches that description is called Earth 2160. There were also many prequels to the game. Hope that helps.

If it was a side scroller it might be gradius gaiden. two player in that was fun. I used to play gradius iii on the snes all the time so i was excited to play it on ps1.
