1243 views and 5 Replies? Does this Annoy you? and i guess Threads in General

I make threads regularly and i try to make them as Unique as possible [failing sometimes]. but when i wake up and see only a couple of Replies and a Massive amount of Views all i can think is

why not post?
even if the thread is Bollocks surely you could just say something to add to the Conversations.

When i go into Forums and Threads i try real hard to post something even if its just saying something small like 'Oh your Argument is quite plausible i believe ...Etc.

something small is all that keeps that thread alive and going. This isn't just for me, i just sometimes see alot of threads that are slumped down that are quite Unique and interesting get Squandered by a Thread that pop's up every odd week. But even those Repeat threads can be entertaining i was reading 'Stupid Teammates online' a thread by someone i cant recall [sorry].

I was laughing at some of the stuff posted even if its a Repeat thread you can get some information about said thread knowing about other's thoughts and minds about certain games and Movies. Which is interesting i find.

So i posted this and now i don't know what else too write.....Don't you just hate that?

I mean, if I feel that I don't have anything to contribute to a discussion, I usually won't type anything. No need to reiterate what's already there. That's my mentality at any rate, I don't know how much it would account for other people.

I think the words placed in front of me are really annoying, because scientific literature is really hard to understand. Look, paper, I just want a picture of the sample under SEM, you don't need to lecture me on the thermodynamics of...whatever it is you're trying to lecture on.

I generally lurk unless I have an opinion. Because if I don't, I don't have anything worthwhile to say, and I'd reduce the quality of the thread by adding a highly skippable comment. If it's not on page 2 yet though, I'm more likely to comment, not because I like to be on the front page and feel like a special snowflake, but.... okay, maybe because of the snowflake thing, but my opinion will be less likely to have been said 1000 times. That's the real reason, honest *shifty eyes*.

I agree with you, seeing quite a lot of views (1000+) on a post or something and then seeing only 5-10 comments is quite frustrating when you put a lot of thought or effort into it.
My friend made a build on MOBAfire which has close to 5000 views and yet it only has 7 comments... people could at least have said "Good build" or anything really.

im not holding a Gun at your head. Im not saying you or anyone else HAS to take this advice its purely optional.

even saying that is helpful providing your own thoughts on the subject of my post is good and is providing a sort of discussion.

This thread had 7 replies & 99 views when I looked at it. Hilarious.

First of all, I don't like people who make threads every day. I seriously doubt you can come up with something interesting and original to discuss that often. But it's pretty hard to tell if someone does that, so that's usually irrelevant.

I am one of those people that only posts in (roughly) 1/5th of the threads I look at. The kind of person you're complaining about. This is why.

I usually don't post in really long threads, unless it's REALLY long, in which case I like to help it along.

I don't post in threads where I feel my opinion is either invalid or unnecessary. As in, the topic doesn't concern me, or someone else has already said whatever I would or could say.

As a personal rule, I try to avoid posting in repeat threads.

I absolutely hate threads where the OP doesn't say anything, just asks some inane question and expects me to bump up their post count. If you can't be bothered contributing, why should I?

And finally, though this may sound arrogant, I sometimes don't post because I don't believe the thread/OP is worth my attention.

Oh, and at least half of the posts I type out never actually get posted.

Why get annoyed at people reading your post and not replying? What proportion of people reading to people replying would you find satisfying/acceptable? Does this ratio change depending on whether you've asked for help? Stated an opinion that's important to you? Asked about a hypothetical scenario?

There are an infinite number of reasons not to post. Among them, 'I have no opinion', 'I haven't got time now', 'I can't think of anything funny to say', 'I don't understand', 'I don't want to look stupid', 'I have nothing worthwhile to say', 'I don't know the answer', 'I don't like the OP'.

It is probably easier to answer the question "Why post?" - but not everyone asks themselves that question - and not all of us come up with the right answer to that, either.

Normal reasons why I dont reply to threads are:

1) misleading thread titles, I go in expecting one thing, get another and so leave

2) Being unable to add anything of worth to the thread, for example I go into a politics or educational system related topic, find out its about the american political and educational system, and of course being in England means I have no knowledge of their systems and so can't really make any comments of worth or value

3) My thoughts/opinions already being covered by someone else, at that point I might as well just qoute them and say "what that guy said" which is a little pointless.

4) Just general lurking around, particularily when threads get lengthy, 6+ pages I wont bother replying because by that time my one reply will get swamped under everyone elses so no one is going to take notice, I'll read all 6+ pages if it interests me but I will most likely not reply at that point, It's why I've been around so long but only have a couple hundred posts.

Actualy expanding on number 4 a bit, I actualy prefer shorter threads sometimes, serious ones at least (silly ones like sharing pictures, jokes, videos etc benefit from being longer), means the conversation, debate and back and forth is more concise and easier to keep track of.

Imagine it like being with 3 friends at a pub and all of you start talking about something serious and that you are all passionate about, you are able to hear eachothers opinions and viewpoints easily, debate etc. now imagine if everyone in the pub joined in, suddenly you have hundreds of voices all yelling over one another to get their opinion heard and as such no one gets heard.

I guess where I was going with that is that not having a ton of replies is sometimes a good thing. Oh and as for views, I don't know, does the escapist track guest and unregistered users viewing threads? if so that may count for a lot of them and why there are so few replies sometimes, I know I lurked on the forums for a good few months before I registered.

I've noticed that this message board tends to get bogged down with traffic (particularly on Wednesdays...thanks, Yahtzee), often resulting in new threads not showing up on the list for at least a few minutes. Couple that with the glut of ridiculously popular "would you do 'x' with/to your avatar" and "the last enemy you killed is now..." topics and it often results in the thread becoming halfway buried before anyone has a chance to see it, much less respond to it. Now I'm not an expert on these things, but I think it would be a good idea for the Escapist to look into optimizing the performance of the forums to minimize this sort of thing.

I won't lie, there have been times when I've been disappointed by the lack of responses to threads I make, particularly if I put a lot of time and effort into the original post. I don't usually start new threads unless I think it's a topic worth discussing, so it's frustrating when nobody bothers to answer.

OP: You know damn well that you hate wandering through 100s of worthless posts some people make all over the place because they can't help but post in every thread they look at. I can't tell you how many times I am having a discussion in the threads and find 15 "I have no opinion on this topic, but here is a post" posts between the responses. It's pointless, and I can only imagine how much worse it would be if everyone actually did post just for the sake of posting.

Makes me think you don't really want all people that view all threads to post, no you just want everyone that views your threads to post.
