That's right, outside of the influence from "British heavy metal bands Enter Shikari and Bring Me The Horizon" [sic], this troubled student must have been influenced by vidyergames!

Oh, Daily Mail!

The article mentions that other students thought he felt like an "outcast". Far more than I care about which video games he played or how much he played them, I'd like to know why he felt like that.

EDIT: For those who are fortunate enough not to know, the Daily Mail is a shameful rag of a publication, though its comments sections are relatively absorbent and worth a laugh or two, which gives it pride of place in toilets across the nation. Remember the Fox article from the last thread and you'll have a good idea.

There is absolutely nothing to discuss here, other than "biased and inaccurate news source is biased and inaccurate".

Tell us something we don't know.

Well, it's been a while since I saw metal being brought into this sort of thing. Nice to know my preferred genre is still relevant...

Seriously though, highlighting gaming, metal AND mental illness? Daily Mail, you truly have outdone yourself. You must be very proud.

I am pleased to report, however, that this is the first I've heard of this angle. None of the other coverage I've seen/heard has mentioned anything about the suspect's hobbies (or anything about him at all really, since he's a minor and hasn't even been interviewed by the police yet). I'm glad the DM continues to be an anomaly.

Pfft, I'm sure it was the video games that drove him to this, surely it wasn't the bullying, drinking, drug abuse, and issues with isolation.

Wonder why they haven't gotten a motive yet though...

Yeah, but... it's always fun to rag on the Daily Mail. It's pretty much a national pastime by this point :p

On the subject of music, I agree. Frankly, I don't think the metal is getting enough love these days. All the kids seem to enjoy is listening to that wub-wub noise while they're getting stoned out of their collective gourd and occasionally letting off fireworks. Whatever happened to blasting German death metal while speeding a tank destroyer through the neighbour's greenhouse at three times the legal limit? No class whatsoever.

With video game footage, because topicality.

EDIT: Oh, I meant to add (for the OP): What do you wish to discuss regarding the article, to avoid flaming?

The sad thing is that if you're so out of touch with reality that games, music, and movies can inspire you to commit acts of violence, then I'd say there's a bigger problem with the person than there is with the games, music, and movies.

Oh, but having that mindset means I actually think it's better to blame the person that committed the crime, and we certainly can't do that...not when there's strawmen to burn!

Trust the Daily Mail to focus on games and music rather than the bullying or the fact that he clearly had some mental health issues.

No, no, that might require some difficult questions.

I saw a friend link this on facebook just now and was about make a thread as well.

As much as I hate pulling more views to DM for click-bait sensationalist articles which I feel whose only intended audience is to clueless housewives, this really hit a nerve with me.

Of all the games they could have chosen, they chose Dark Souls?
Their description of the game is that it is 'a fantasy game where players kill others to survive'.
Except most of the thing you 'kill' aren't even human, and those that are humanoid are practically zombies?

If anything the message of Dark Souls is a positive one - to triumph through adversity, to learn from your mistakes and to keep going no matter how hopeless and dark the world is.

Of course they're clever enough to not actually state that they think games are the possible course of the incident. But the implication is obvious to anyone already predisposed to the idea.

I think it's clear that the things he enjoys doing are typical of what many teenagers does, and if anything can only be symptomatic of his depression, not the reason for it.

And most importantly- condolences to the teacher and all involved in this terrible incidence.

Enter Shikari & BMTH, what is this, 2008?

OT: Sounds like he obviously has issues that are far more complex than choice of music and games. And I don't think anyone takes the Daily Mail seriously so it's best just to ignore it.

It's quite sad how they use a tragedy like this to promote an out of date point of view instead of pinpointing the real problems which led to this (whatever those might be). But hey, I've got a joke to cheer everyone up: the Daily Mail.

Sounds like he had quite a few emotional issues and put out alot of warnings signs prior to the killing. Too bad for the teacher.

I think people try to assign blame to video games, music, literature etc in an attempt to try and explain what would make a 15 year old attack and murder his teacher as it is such a senseless crime, especially when people attest that he had attentive parents and got decent grades. However, you truly don't know what goes on behind closed doors, in one's mind and what could potentially trigger someone to attack and maim or murder another, most of this article seems to be based on fear. It is a trend that is seen time and time again in popular media, also, the paper will want to sell, so they will go for the most attention grabbing thing they can think of, something that will rally their readership behind them. Unfortunately that usually turns out to be video games and heavy metal music.

Well, he did backstab her...

Other than that, you're kinda overreacting. They go through his entire personal life in almost disturbing detail, I really don't see them singling out video games specifically. Even the headlines vary neatly from "middle class drug user" to "loner who played video games".
