So I got into the For Honor closed beta that's running. Yay.

Getting in includes receiving 3 other invites to give away. Since none of my real life friends are into games, or at least not into games that aren't shooters, you fine folks can have a shot at them.

My invites are valid for PC only, so you'll need a PC that meets the requirements:
http://www.thumbsticks.com/for-honor-system-requirements-21012017/

You'll also need a Uplay account. (Bleh, I know.)

Also, for reasons unknown to me it won't work if you live in Japan or mainland China. (Also North Korea, but that kinda goes without saying.)

I'll need your Uplay account name so post it here or PM it to me if you're interested. Invites allocated according to my completely arbitrary whims. I'll need to add you to my Uplay friends list to send the invite. You can remove me afterwards if you like, I promise I won't cry.

Initial impressions: Awful.

Controls are crap. M+K is a joke, it's clearly designed for a controller. But for some bizarre reason it uses the controller trigger buttons instead of the face buttons for attacks.

Does a terrible job at teaching you anything beyond the most basic mechanics.

I can see it being fun after a steep learning curve, but I don't see it being worth the effort.

Oh, and it's going to be one those games where trying to play it any significant time after launch will be a nightmare because it will be filled with people who are familiar with the cheapest characters and techniques.

Mediocre, with the caveat that I think it has potential if sorted out. It is a Mount & Blade: Warband, War of the Roses or War of the Vikings for a modern generation and with more polish. The gameplay is Rock, Paper, Scissors (Vanguards trumps Defenders trumps Assassins trumps Vanguard) and the moment to moment action is fairly engaging, as it is more about carefully planning and adapting your attacks and parries then it is about mashing buttons to score kills.

But as Zhukov said, the controls for Mouse and Keyboard are atrocious, the characters move rather sluggishly and it is way too easy to get juggle locked, particularly if you get ganged up on. The balance on the hand seems rather fine at the moment, there are some cheap moves on some classes that can completely lockdown several other classes, but no class is obviously broken at this point, as they all are countered by some other class.

Oh, and the way the unlocks are set up is perplexing as fuck. You unlock your 4 class skills by scoring (capping, killing etc.), which means that a team that gets an early advantage can potentially snowball away as they can use skills from a tier that the other team has yet to unlock. In the worst scenario I experienced I had my tier 4 skill unlocked and faced players that had only unlocked their Tier 2.

That kinda sound like a MOBA, is there a way for the behind team to securely get some exp safely? (i.e. the equivalent of farming minion under a tower)

Yeah, the fastest and most reliable way to get xp is to kill the minions that constantly clash at the middle point. Problem is that the middle point is also where the most fights tend to happen. So if the enemy team locks it down, you are pretty much fucked in regards to xp.

Ugh. Rubbish game. Ended up uninstalling within 24 hours of downloading.

I could maybe deal with the learning curve and the rubbish tutorials but the clumsy and unresponsive controls were the nail in the coffin. Goddamn Mount & Blade did something similar to this but controlled better despite being made by two people.

Ah well, at least the beta saved me some cash.

Kind of a shame, I really liked some of the character designs.

Game seems like it has a lot of potential. The classes are interesting (though there are some balance issues) and the combat mechanics are pleasant and engaging.

The multiplayer setup with p2p hosted games is a terrible idea though. The lag is quite frustrating, and severely impacts the gameplay. Sometimes you won't see a heavy attack until it's lodged in your nose, and sometimes attacks that you block (and see animation-wise as blocked) will still count as hits (and lead to chain attacks as if you didn't block).

If they just add in dedicated servers this seems like a game I could get into.

Oh, and the learning curve wasn't that steep. It looks like it will be, but there are some videos and guides you can look into (the videos are included in the game under 'HOW TO PLAY -> Hero videos') to shorten it down drastically. The best way to learn is to do 1v1 duels (a game mode you can select) against different classes.

Oh, and play Warlord. Those are overpowered as bloody hell right now and very easy to play.
