Apologies in advance for the length. Thank you much if you read all the way through and can think of a possible solution!

Alright, so I did an Escapist search and couldn't find anything related to my current situation, and global search engine inquiries aren't getting me anywhere. So, in a last-ditch effort to solve my issue, I present it here for my fellow Escapists.

I have two gamertags of my own on my current 360, and my boyfriend's is there as well. My old gamertag and his own were both on our old 360, a Core which I'd purchased the year the 360 first came out (2005, I believe) and bought a 120gb hard drive for. We've had no problems with DLC in the past, save for the easy fixes - Remove the hard drive for longer than a certain amount of time, stuff auto-erases for some inexplicable reason, but only certain files. No big deal, we just worked around it.

Several months ago, my boyfriend purchased the 250gb Slim. We transferred everything from the Core to the Slim using an external hard drive without any issues, and everything worked just fine. I'd purchased a large amount of DLC on my old gamertag, but most of it was for games that I hadn't played in quite some time. I recently acquired Red Dead Redemption and purchased the Undead Nightmare pack, which worked flawlessly. RDR was the only game I'd played on my new gamertag that was never played on my old one, and the UN pack for it was one of only two DLC items I purchased specifically on my new gamertag. Up until this point, DLC worked just fine between all three gamertags - Oblivion expansions, Guitar Hero tracks, etc.

Upon attempting to play Mass Effect on my new gamertag, I was given the lovely message that all of my extra content was corrupted and needed to be re-downloaded. Not a problem, I've seen it before. So I go into the memory and remove all of the DLC, turn the Slim off for a while, then come back a bit later and re-download everything. Start up Mass Effect... Same message. So I put Mass Effect 2 in. What a surprise! The corruption alert again.

Somehow, all of the DLC on the Slim's drive has been corrupted (for all gamertags), and no amount of deletion and re-download seems to fix it. I've tried just about everything I can think of with this to try and solve it, but nothing thus far has worked.

Suggestions, Escapists? Hopefully nobody mentions licensing... Most of my DLC was purchased on my old gamertag, and the email attached to it was hacked quite some time ago, so I no longer have access and thus cannot renew the licensing for that particular gamertag...

(Oh, and for the record, the 360 is always online.)

I would guess that the problem is the part I underlined in your post. Although PC gamers are the ones who complain the loudest about DRM, I'm guessing you have run into a similar problem. I'm guessing Bioware has stamped your old user account's ID on the DLC, and when you try to use it with a different user account the game's DRM policy kicks in.

This was one of my initial guesses as well. But after contemplating it for a while, I began to wonder... It's still a possibility, as I can't really rule anything out yet, but I imagine that if this was the case, it would work both ways. For example, the RDR DLC I had purchased on my NEW gamertag worked on both my OLD gamertag AND my boyfriend's current one.

Part of why I'm so baffled.

It might be because of how the Xbox DRM works. When you download things on one Xbox with one account, they are bound to both the Xbox and the account. The Xbox the content is bound to can use the content without having the matching account signed in, and the matching account can use the content on a different Xbox, so long as there is a connection to Xbox LIVE and the account is signed in.

With a new Xbox, the best thing to do is transfer your licenses, which, as you've said, you can't do. However, the problem you are describing (other than your hard drive inexplicably erasing things. That shouldn't happen. Ever) sounds like it's more of a problem with Bioware and Mass Effect than the Xbox.

Best advice I can give you is re-buy the things you need. Wish I could help more, but I can't.
Yeah, from what little I could dig up through search engines, the internet connection part seemed like the big deal, but since the 360 is always connected, I figured I was okay.

Here's an interesting tidbit, though: I created my new gamertag on the Slim, just about a month ago. I purchased some DLC on that gamertag, and even THAT'S corrupted.

By the sound of it, I'm totally screwed.

(The random erasing deal was on my old Xbox, the ancient 6-year-old one. Not sure what the deal was with that... It wouldn't do it all the time, and not with all of my DLC. Saves were fine.)

Buy PS3! :) (sorry, just had to get it out of the way)

Do you still have your fatboy? Try playing your DLC (new and old) on it and if it works then you might have a problem with a corrupted flashdrive on your slim. Less than a year old Microsoft should help alleviate your pain with a nice, new, refurbished unit.

Demand a refund and buy a PS3. Never be bothered with DRM corrupting your DLC ever again.

Seriously.

Really? Is that at all helpful? A PS3 might be an alterntive, but I doubt she'd want to buy a new console, coupled with replacing her game library only then to have to repurchase her DLC?

OP: Like suggested, I would just call MS support and hassle the fuck out of them until they help, it's usually the approach I have to take with Telstra and it pays off eventually if you stick with it. You have to do it over the phone though, otherwise the MS support think their email warrior tactics will avoid them having to actually support you despite the name.

First of all, I think you should restore the Slim's factory presets, and log in with your new XBox Live ID. This may fix some of your problems. The thing is: you have done stuff to the Slim that it wasn't designed to handle, and Microsoft isn't very open about what's actually inside the Slim. I found detailed specs on the XBox 360 Core, but nothing but bits'n'pieces of hardware details on the Slim.

One simple answer to all of your problems is the Operating System Slim is running on. Each XBox 360 version (Core, Pro, Elite, Slim) has a custom built Operating System, which is about as much information as I could dig up. It may be that the Core and Slim versions are not entirely compatible, and since you have transfered stuff from the Core to the Slim via an external hard drive, you have accidentally wrecked something. I don't know what: this is not a PC that you can run diagnostics on. Well, obviously Microsoft can, but a home user will have a difficult time doing so.

Cute. Not really. I came to this forum because I thought that I could escape the fanboy bullshit pervading every other. Too much to ask for an intelligent forum, right? Now everything has to be a flame war because of people like you. If you're going to contribute something intelligent, by all means do so. If not, stay out.

On Topic: I don't know exactly what your problem is, but you might be able to download all of the DLC again free. That's all I have, though.

As I've stated multiple times in this thread: The 360 is always connected to the internet, 24/7. You are correct, though - When using your old hard drive on a new Xbox, you can use any previously-purchased DLC as long as the Xbox has an internet connection.

As stated, try the DLC on the Core, then you know if it's the content or the HDD of the Slim
Still works on the Core. My biggest issue is seeing if I can possibly solve the issue with the Slim's HDD, or if I'm basically screwed out of the cash I spent on all that DLC.

Well, then. I'm completely at a loss. Have you tried calling MS support? They tend to be useless for awhile, but if you push through to the top so you can get someone who does more than read the help and support page on xbox.com, they can be pretty helpful.
I haven't. I'd hoped there would be some way for me to alleviate the problem on my own without having to deal with the Customer Support peeps that have so rarely offered me any gems of insight in the past. I may not have much choice, though, judging by the sound of things.

I guess I didn't realized that something I'd done wasn't within the capacity of the Slim... I definitely see your point though, and it stands to reason that the difference in the systems themselves could certainly be a factor (and a glaring oversight on my part). I'll certainly see what I can do in terms of tinkering with the 360 itself and try to make some headway.

Read this, and stop complaining about the DRM. [http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Support/LicenseMigration/Home]

My money is most definitely on the hard drive having failed. Format it.

I'm sorry to hear that. DLC shouldn't be corrupted randomly, though a faulty hard drive is the most likely culprit. Not being able to transfer your licenses would be a pain in the ass but it shouldn't corrupt your DLC. It's strange that a Slim that isn't even a year old has a faulty Hard Drive, but that's what sometimes happens. You may have to resort to ringing up Microsoft customer support.

Sorry I can't do more to help.

Congrats. You've posted the dumbest post I've seen all week. Please check your facts before posting like this.

That sounds a lot more correct than any DLC issues. Especially being that generalized.
