Quite a few games are getting the remake treatment from Atlus. I'm not familiar with Etrian Odysey, but I played both Radiant Historia and Strange Journey, and they were both amazing games. It seems that these remakes will be adding a great deal to each game, with a third timeline (Radiant Historia focusing on time travel and bouncing back and forth between two alternate timelines) and new characters for Strange Journey. Radiant Historia in particular was a very under appreciated game, and I hope it gets more attention this time around.

You guys have any thoughts on this?

All of em great series. The etrian games are old school first person turn based dungeon crawlers like Ultima and so on, pretty solid.

I am hoping for a dual audio/JP voice release of Radiant Historia because I love those Shimotsuki Haruka songs.

I have less interest in Strange Journey not because it's a bad game but rather because it's so good that I've played the original to exhaustion so I don't yet feel it's time for me to replay it again, maybe in a few years. If you haven't ever played it though, it's a must play.

Holy crap! The EO5 boards on Reddit and GameFAQs have been a sad funereal place lamenting the death of the series and holding out a vain hope of Atlus ever bothering to announce localization for months now.

I was actually going to post a thread here to see if anyone had even known there WAS a 5th game that seemingly was destined to go the way of Mother 3 etc.

I'm quite happy about this news!

I liked the first 3 games quite a bit, and I finished 4 feeling pretty okay about it. I wasn't a fan of the airship stuff, preferring the ocean charting of EO3 but its the classes that make the games anyways. I preferred the first 2 before they added subclassing because it just made the classes less distinct even if it did open up a ton of different options.

Invariably I never use Lands. Gunners in EO2 are probably one of my favorite classes in the series.

I haven't bought either of the Untold games. I prefer making my own party, and while I know that is an option in parallel with the new story mode, I already own all the originals so..

I've never heard of any of those (except for SMT but that particular game I'm not familiar with).

However, it's from Atlus so I can go ahead and just assume it's great. There are not a lot of companies that name-alone gets me excited but Atlus (and maybe Naughty Dog?) is one of the few. They all look like RPGs as well, which is another big plus in my book.

I hope they're not going to make me cry and put it on that stupid ass NEW Nintendo 3DS. I don't want to have to buy a slightly shinier version of the 3DS I already have for a handful of games...

Despite it's spinoff-sounding title, Strange Journey is a mainline SMT game, you can even find references to it in SMTIV. It's a really great game and for being on the DS it had no drawbacks amazingly.

I remember seeing giant demons fighting like a kaiju fight in SJ. I'd love to see that whole scene.

I tried the Etrian Odysey IV demo because I heard good things about it, but I still found the combat unexciting. It's just a personal preference; I usually find turn-based RPGs less interesting when the combat is in first-person view, and this one wasn't the exception.

A third timeline on Radiant Historia?! Holy crap, that's a pretty damn good reason for me to buy the remake. And I'll still have to see Strange Journey Redux, if the dungeon crawling if like SMT IV, I'll buy it since I didn't play the original. Really don't like the dungeons being grids you navigate in first person like in Etrian Odysey.

I'm vaguely interested in Etrian Odyssey, although I want to play Etrian Untold I and II first.

I wonder if this is it for the Etrian Odyssey franchise. It was really just the kind of thing made for the DS family. Can't really see it working on the Switch.

I've heard enough about the Radiant Historia game over the years to know I want to play it, so that's an instant buy as soon as I know it's available.

I don't know much at all about the SMT games, but after playing P5, I kinda want to dive deeper into all those games. It's on my radar now at least. But I don't know anything about Etrian Odyssey.

I adore Etrian Odyssey, am really thrilled to hear this announcement, but if the DS series of handhelds is now dead, I lament that EO will likely die with it (since it really wouldn't work on anything else).

Shit, you're right. That's sad.

It could work on any platform really, it would just require the mapping to be reworked. It might not be as smooth as having a separate screen for it but there are still options.

A map system like Darkest Dungeon, putting it off to the side, would be fine. You could implement the touchpad on the PS4 controller in some capacity, though the Switch has an advantage of more accurately emulating the existing set up.

But why the 3DS and not the Switch?

I can play the regular version of Radiant Historia right now on my 3DS, but my Switch is starving for games.

Etrian Odyssey... Well, I'd like it more if made the map for me. Though I hate the stylus with a passion.

But... it's not on the Switch?

EDIT: Or are we lamenting the death of the 3DS, here? I still highly doubt that Nintendo is going to just completely shelve handheld gaming because of the Switch. They'd be pretty shortsighted to do that.

Nobody knows anymore. 3DS might stay or Switch replaces it(if they can give it battery life, the DS4 controller has more life).

I'm fairly certain they stated the 3ds is going nowhere and will remain paralel to the switch, just the Wii U is killed off.

As for the first person rpg system, I also used to dislike those, but Strange Journey fixed that, which is why it holds a special place in my heart. If you want other good ones that will make you like the genre, Demon's Gaze (mentioned above) as well as Dungeon Travelers 2, Stranger of Sword City and Ray Gigant are all great ones.

It's pretty clear the system's on its way out, though. I just hope it holds on long enough for me to get my DQ11 localization.
