Came across this article [http://www.adventuresinpoortaste.com/2012/08/02/6-things-you-may-not-know-about-super-mario/] earlier and was surprised to see a few facts that I haven't seen mentioned before. (i.e. Mario having the cognomen 'Jumpman' prior to the Mario Bros. arcade release, Minus World, why he has a hat and overalls, etc.)
That Koopa Troopa one is just the slightest bit unnerving. Though for Japanese folklore... I suppose it's pretty tame in retrospect, haha.
They should have added the fact that Chain Chomps were based on Miyamoto's encounter with a chained up dog? Or is that one too obvious?
