I was just wondering what other people here thought of 9gag (the meme website).

Personally, I completely hate it. Apart from the fact that the gags are very rarely funny, it is also a cesspool of racism, misogyny and other things which displease me, San Martín the judgmental.

To tell the truth I shouldn't even make this thread, since it will probably just send curious people over there. But hey, I'm an adult and I do what I want!

So, do you agree with me? Or do you think I'm a humourless ogre?

I vist it daily ... what else am I going to do on a 40 minute train ride, when binding of isaac rebirth has given me a migraine?

I recently posted a comment about the difference between a feminist and a feminazi ... so far I've had over 5,000 people up vote me.

Is the site perfect? Fuck no, reposts galore, barely dressed ladies section (it's a joke site!) And 50% of the posts are confessions, weird shit I do, knives and look at my animal watch me poop.

If you're going to a joke app/site to read comments (to find out it is those those things you listed) then you're doing it wrongly.

The comments are a lot better than youtube and, if what I heard is true, they are a lot better than 4chans

Congratulations on your success! I don't think feminazis exist outside of people's imaginations, but at least you got upvotes I suppose.

I accept your criticism. My going on 9gag with the express intention of reading the comments in order to make myself angry is not the most constructive way of using the site. But there are some really backward folks on there, and I would most certainly hit them all with a long stick if I could.

I visit it occasionally when I've exhausted the new content on hugelol.com... Which has been happening annoyingly quickly for the last half year or so.
The constant woman-bashing and "look at these pictures of 27 weird clouds I found!" posts prevents 9gag from becoming anything I'd visit more often.

Like most sites based around the concept of memes and image resharing, I never saw the appeal in it myself and have steered clear. I'm informed by my more opinionated friends that I should hate it because its not ___. I just don't really care.

From what I can tell, the best part about it is when 4chan pulls an especially crazy rage-inducing prank, and then frames 9gag for it.

That sounds all kinds of funny.

Haven't visited in a long while.
Many friends are there on a daily basis and usually send me the funny parts, so I get the goods without having to scroll through all the shit that is there :p

Meh. I've met some seriously bigoted people calling themselves feminists (If you hear anyone say they're a 'radical feminist', run the other way. Quickly... >_>) who clearly qualify, but I do think the word gets thrown around way too much, and too easily.

Ugh. All those 'radical feminists' seem to do is make the rest of us have to work 10 times harder for the rest of of to get any kind of complaint to do with sexism taken seriously... >_>

Never visited it, but you're description pretty much confirms what I keep hearing about it - that it's pretty similar to 4chan, a site that I have visited and don't look kindly upon. Needless to say, I can't be arsed to give a crap about 9gag, nor o I have any desire to visit it anytime soon.

I've heard pretty terrible things about Reddit too, but in my experience that one's not so bad, which probably has something to do with the sub-reddit system keeping the fucked up shit contained and easy to avoid as well as the much more newbie-friendly nature of the site (the whole "lurk more" mentality of 4chan rubs me the wrong way, like they're the goth kids from South Park - "Do exactly as we do or you won't be accepted"). I'm not going to hear someone call another user a Jewish fag who needs to hang themselves or how they need to take their ass back to the kitchen in the Hearthstone sub-reddit, for example, whereas such behavior is both accepted and encouraged on 4chan (and I'm not just talking /b/ and /pol/ here, despite them being the obvious worst offenders. Trolling and hostility is literally part of the culture in all 4chan boards from what I've seen).

Welp, I do have to agree with this, so long as the prank isn't actually harmful or causing a bunch of collateral damage of course. Hearing about the slap fights between 4chan and other similar sites is generally the only amusement I get from sites like those, due to pure schadenfreude.

Eh, there's lots of different sorts of radical feminists. Sure, you get people like the TERFs, but then there's other radfems opposing them.

What are TERFs?

Am I right in thinking that confusing 'radical feminist' with 'extreme, bigoted feminist' is a mistake, albeit an unfortunately common one?

You would hope so... To be fair I've come across one or two, but... I'm not even sure...

Given the ones I've had the misfortune of talking to, I don't know if that's a 'mistake', or if I've just been very unlucky.

TERF specifically means Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Though I prefer to call them BARF's, (I'll leave it to you to figure out what that one means... XD)

Eh. It wears me out even thinking about these people... >_>

"Radical Feminism" is the name of a particular feminist ideology. But, yeah, "radical" is often used to mean "extremist", so you'd could say Radical Feminist (belonging to that ideology) or radical feminist (feminist who is radical/extreme). The two gets mixed up a lot, yeah.

The TERFs are Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists, who are a faction of vile transphobic bigots within Radical Feminism. IIRC, "Exclusionary" used to be "Eliminationist" instead.

I have to admit, I visit it daily. Cannot disagree with the people who say that it's a cesspool of rascism and everything around it.

If you visit it, it is best to avoid the commentary, and hopefully find something funny. Which is also lacking lately. I wouldn't be visiting it if it weren't for the country ball thingy's.

Well, I sometimes go to memebase I have nothing to do and have looked at everything else on the internet. They sound about the same.

Haha, she sounds mental! But I doubt people like that exist in anywhere near large enough numbers to deserve a place in the discussion. I've certainly never met one, despite having met lots of other feminists.

Who was it by the way? Was it that Solanas type?

I visit 9gag occasionally because I need to kill time, other than having very little original content it is not a bad(offensive) site.

I have to disagree, most boards are pretty civil as long as you follow the rules and keep yourself civil, outside of /b/ trolling and similar behavior is against the rules. Does some still slip through? Yes, but that does not mean that it is endorsed. It really is not that different than most forums, just that moderating powers are used more commonly(and visibly) for regulation, and scare people into avoiding conflict, whereas on 4chan user interaction is harsher because there is no reason for people not to combative. Sure that tends to make the place a bit rougher on newcomers, but at the same time, I have had plenty of conversations on 4chan that were more polite than some things posted here. I respect your opinion, but I don't think it is fair to make such blanket statements about a site.
