I like the older final fantasies, kingdom hearts (well I think it's a jrpg), and a few others, but there are so many BAD jrpgs, and I really need a good one. I have no problem with the jrpg stereotypes (spiky haired brooding protagonists, etc.), but I'm just looking for a jrpg that has satisfying combat and a story that isn't badly written and acted on any playstation or gameboy. (No star ocean or golden suns, please)

"Good" is an opinion. Everybody here is going to give you different options based on their own favorites. There is no overall "good" JRPG, as everybody is going to think differently of what they consider to be "good."

My two cents? I dislike all JRPG's that aren't Pokemon. It might not have the best story in the world, but the combat is satisfying and challenging. To me, at least.

Again, opinions, that is all you will receive when asking something like this.

Kingdom Hearts is indeed a JRPG

Though, the only things I can think of to recommend is .Hack, Nier, Odin Sphere or FFXIII.

The World Ends With You. The combat is fun and can be complex if you try to master it, and the story is unique and has a message to it, one that is delivered without being cheesy or feeling forced. Also, the art and music is fresh and modern, so overall it's a great worth checking out.

anyone have an opinion on Grandia 1? I'm kind of curious
It's a good game. The graphics are a bit dated and the voice acting is often awful but the art style ages better than the likes of FFVII and it's got an interesting and different combat mechanic. Story is...eh, it's pretty good I guess. As far as PS1 JRPGs go, I'd definetly recommend Grandia 1 to anyone looking to play. I even still have both of the discs from my original copy, though they sadly in all the moving houses I've done over the past two years they've gotten scratched beyond repair, so I make do with ePSXe.

You can't go wrong with the latest 2 persona games (P3FES and P4) I haven't heard good things about the first two, however.

also what ripoff said, ToS is really REALLY good. so is vesperia. but only playing a few hours of it I can't really be a fair judge.

Resonance of Fate. :D

Really fun gameplay (challenging at first, but once you get it, it's great), good story, great characters, etc. Probably the most enjoyable JRPG I've ever played.

Okay, now go!

Also, I'm most likely getting a wii down the road, how's Arc Rise Fantasia? (the Unskippable worries me a little)

I third Tales of Symphonia. Fantastic game, pretty great voice acting, great story and you can even have your friends (if applicable) join in on the combat! No monotonous turn-based combat and some of the puzzles will wrack your mind (but not in the Legend of Zelda way by any means), though the way positioning works in combat will often leave you very menacingly slicing through oxygen. I'm just sad that I lost my game discs... Not to mention, the choices you make can drastically alter the storyline, as well, complete with death of a party member(s) (no further spoilers).

ToS and it's sequel are both very good. I seriously don't get why Dawn of the New World gets so much hate...

A friend of mine also really loves Arc Rise Fantasia, but I haven't played it, myself.

Games I can personally recommend:

Grandia 2
Persona 4
Riviera: The Promised Land
Disgaea(SRPG)
Crimson Gem Saga
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy IV (by far my fave FF)
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy XIII (Ignore the hate, the gameplay is surprisingly tactical, with a hard difficulty that doesn't hold back)
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (a LotR turn-based RPG, good fun!)
Lost Odyssey
Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Trigger (On DS if possible)
Chrono Cross
So many more, but this should keep you busy for a long, LONG time.

Final Fantasy X-2
You better be recommending that for the battle/garment grid system, as that is the only redeemable feature of that game.

And I loved the battle system.

Jade Empire
This is a WRPG. It's from Bioware :p

In this last generation I've enjoyed both Folklore (PS3) and Lost Odyssey (360), both of which should be pretty damn cheap by now.
