Just a thought I had during a discussion earlier this evening. What would you guys make of a Horus Heresy film? As a huge fan of the books I would love to see a film, provided it is well made.

I personally would go for the narrative trilogy of the first three books.

Building up the characters, drawing sides between them and culminating in the Isstvan III virus bombing, and the subsequent last stand of the loyalists. Focusing on Loken, Torgaddon and Tarvitz's defiance to the very end and trying to paint a poignant picture of the traitors. Such as Abaddon acting through fear of losing Horus after he is wounded and Aximand's reluctance to turn on his brothers and his open weeping after Torgaddon's death at his hand.

So what book would you put into a film?

Any interesting casting suggestions?

And please PLEASE PUT SPOILERS ON PIVOTAL SCENES AND SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

For all of you who haven't quite read them yet. ^^

A trilogy of the first three books would be awesome, but i doubt there would be enough funding or interest in the story for it. Maybe an animated series would be more likely, albeit not as good :/

I think the problem would be that any film made would be instantly judged on "Not another Space Marine picture" before it even got off the drawing board.

Actually. A series probably has a better chance of being good than a trilogy of movies. The movies could very well end up lazy cash-ins aimed at the fans executed in horrendous CGI, ignoring everything and anything that the fans would actually enjoy about a movie based in the 40K universe, much like I feel the upcoming Ultramarines movie will prove to be.

And, while being made into a series of course doesn't guarantee not sucking, it at least gives the creators a chance to prove they can actually make it work rather than an all or nothing movie adaptation. As for traditional animation being use in general: see Batman: TAS, Justice League etc., though, there have been good CGI shows too, Beast Wars, Shadow Raiders, Reboot etc.

Pertaining though, this excellent little, yet sadly short lived gem shows that a series can be done, it's Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles: <youtube=c_9moZ0ZzhY>

I think that A Thousand Sons would make a good movie set before the Horus Heresy...

I am currently reading that.

Ahriman has just told Lemuel about his twin brother Ohrmuzd and the origins of the Thousand Sons

Keep reading, A Thousand Sons is my favorite Space Marine book.

I'd also recommend Cadian Blood which is my favorite Imperial Guard novel
Seth is awesome

The thing is that the horus heresy story is well, I think too huge to fit in merely 3 movies.
They would need to be 3 huge movies but nontheless.
I would love to see a movie about the fall of Eldar and the birth of dark eldar, sounds way more interesting and isn't all about hulky maccho men in space suits.

Rather about egotistic space elves so high on drugs that they're drugged beyond their wildest dreams and sadistic elves who love blood and such but are being slowly drained away by Slaanesh.

Anime might be the way to go, due to the hyper violence involved within the universe and the fact that there is alot of narrative to get across.

Also on a side note, my favourite book so far has been Fulgrim because the Emperors children are so cool but also:

when Fulgrim realises what he has done by the end of the book (killing his closest brother) choked me up somewhat)

Mark Hamill for the voice of Erebus or Lucius :)

The anime style wouldn't really work imo, just doesn't gel with 40K.
Fulgrim had some of my favourite and most hated bits of the Heresy novels
Love the scale of the final attack on the Laer, 900 Ships, that's 27000 marines, assuming each one is a thunderhawk, but stormbirds are bigger. And the Emperor's Children were one of the smallest Legions. This is why the Great Crusade went so well.
Hated the entire daemonsword bit, felt like a total cop-out compared to the old background. That Horus was just that good and twisted Fulgrim's quest for perfection to a darker path.

I think that it could be really cool. I've also read most of the Horus Heresy books and the first three really focus on the core part of the Heresy. A couple others would make good movies (Fulgrim for example), but unless someone already knew the background it could be a bit confusing as to what's going on.

Meh wait till you read the First Heretic and Nemisis. Thoses would make killer films. I think they should first find their feet with the current warhammer 40k film Ultramarines and the black libary audio and books. Which reminds me the unabringed audio of A Thousand Sons is out :D.

To sum this up, The horus heresy series is the history of the "grim dark sci-fi" warhammer 40k table top game.
