Hi, I am interested in installing Linux as an OS on my computer. Does anyone here have any experience with Linux / Unix based Operating systems?

Thanks in advance.

Go there.
The installation instructions are on the site and it's fairly simple. All you'll need besides Internet is a blank CD and disc burning software (Nero came with my copy of Windows, though I don't know that that's standard issue).

Good luck, and welcome to our ranks.

linux can be tough for first timers alone, id strongly recommend that you find someone you know that can come over and physically help you

you may just want to try it on VMware first to make sure you actually want it, if you install it then uninstall it, linux tends to **** with your other operating systems boot system, i installed it in a partition on an XP machine and a windows 7 machine, had to run repair for about an hour on windows 7 and had to completely rebuild the XP machine, dont know how mac will handle it but will probably also have to go through some repair process

or at least get an image of your hard drive before installing

oh, and what are you putting this on and what do you want/expect from it?

iv had some experinece with redhat 4.0-4.8, ubuntu, solaris, and openSuSE 11.1
redhat is solid, ubuntu is free, solaris sucks (in my opinion, not trying to start a flame war), and openSuSE is very nice, i heard you had to pay for it, but the one i found was free and worked great
i know there are alot more, but those are the only ones i have actually worked with

btw, nero is not standard, in fact, most will need to torrent/buy it, imgburn works well though for making disks and its free
correct me if im wrong, but you probably have an alienware (i know they come/came with nero from experience, if they dont anymore, blame dell)

There ya go bud. Perfect distro for the beginner :)

Joking, go with Ubuntu, or Mint, or even Sabayon. If you're going from Windows I recommend KDE over gnome, as KDE is prettier. Just my opinion though.

Nope, though I'd like one. I custom built mine from scratch, got a WinXP code from my brother and a Media Center disk from my parents. Free software! xD
