I want a to build a good gaming computer that won't cost me an arm and a leg. I would like to know what kind of parts to get. Or a list that will help me on my way

I think the best buy at the moment is the i5 2500k CPU on a Z67 motherboard if you are going to overclock, and why wouldn't you with sandybridge? I'm sure you could hit 4.2Ghz with even a cheapish cooler like a Hyper 212+. I'm not sure what the best bang for buck GPU is at the moment but I suspect it would be a 6000 series ATI card, although if you must go Nvidia the gtx 560 and 570 are pretty nice too. Never cheap out on your PSU though, always buy a decent one and try to get a 80+ certified one. If you are trying to save money, a 7200rpm HDD is fast enough for a heavy loading game like Fallout 3. I would recommend a Western Digital Black.

My suggestion:
An AM3 socket motherboard with a fair amount of USB 2.0 and 6 6Gb/s SATA ports
AMD Phenom II quad core 3.2 Ghz CPU
Ati 5570 or higher GPU
700+ W PSU from something like thermaltake
4Gb Dual channel RAM, get a good brand

Logitech G5 gaming mouse, Logitech g11 or g15 keyboard.

This should all come out to under $1000 with some room to play around with parts like the GPU. It will also run most things on the market on maximum settings.

I would mostly agree, but make sure the ram is ddr3 though ddr2 is still good and is cheaper

Oh, yeah I forgot to mention that, definitely DDR3 as 4Gb DDR2 is just... not great.

Meh, DDR3 is best but I get by on my ddr2. It's gonna be a pain when I finally decide to upgrade to DDR3 though :(

Pretty sure you can get an ATI Radeon HD 6000 series card for less than 200 dollars these days.

In theory, DDR3 is better, but when put into practice it's not that much faster. The problem is that you might as well go DDR3 for the future.
