A problem with elitist nerds

I'd rather sit in a room with a Justin Beiber fan who looks like Miley Cirus holding a hand bag with Lady GaGa's face on it than listen to an elitist nerd.

Now that I have you hooked, let me continue.

What is a nerd? By definition, a nerd is one who avidly pursues intellectual activities.

Now obviously the definition of nerd has changed over the years. Today, anyone and everyone can be a nerd. My dad stayed up all night playing Wii bowling just so he could score 300 points. What did I say to him when I heard him brag about his bowling score? "Dad, you're such a nerd!"

You can easily say anyone is a nerd nowadays.
What about the popular pretty boy in your school? Well most likely he does something you'd consider nerdy. Maybe he can work photoshop in ways you can't imagine, maybe he stays up all night doing speed runs on Mario Bros. Unless you get to know these people, you'll never know if they're a closet nerd or an open nerd.

Now, what's an elitist nerd?
An elitist nerd is one who has a "holier than thou" attitude towards almost everything. This nerd is the one you can't take to the movies because "mainstream stuff is shit", this is the person who thinks they're unpopular because they were "too busy studying/working" to care about that stuff, this is the person who hates any game that becomes popular because it's "not hardcore enough anymore".
In short, the elitist nerd is one who hates anything popular and most likely not popular in school because they didn't try to assert themselves

I hate to be buzzkillington, but hating everything doesn't make you cool, it kind of makes you a douche. I've been running into these people more and more and I want to punch them in the face. Especially when they ruin movies for me because they keep huffing and puffing during the whole damn thing. >_>

(I'm talking to you dickhole in Harry Potter who said the movie wasn't smart enough and you kept sighing loudly in my ear. If you didn't want to see the movie, DON'T go see it.

And this goes out to you too guy who laughed at me for purchasing Halo:Reach and saying "You need to learn how to play real games".)

Any questions, comments, concerns?

Am I allowed to be elitist because I'm a LaVeyan Satanist and my religion demands it?

First off, elitism is good because it puts the exceptional together so that they can mutually excel, and gives others something to drive toward. But what you're describing as elitist nerds isn't really elitism, it's just people being assholes. Asshole nerds aren't the same as elitist nerds.

Yes, I have one. Bear with me.

I understand your complaint and wholey sympathize with you on the problem of obsessive nitwits who talk out of their ass all the time. However, I believe that because the nerd thing seems to have become something of a quandary in this day and age...that the definition needs to be adjusted somewhat. It may be that it was a bit too general, since liking something even greatly to the point of fanhood does not have to be a nerdy.

This is what I think, anyway. You don't have to agree with me, but let's take music. My mother loved the Beatles, I love Queen, my sister is into Dave Matthew's band... It happens. I think that there is a determining factor that makes a person actually nerdy, but not everyone who likes things that nerds like IS one. I like science fiction, but I look at a die hard Star Wars nerd and back the fuck away, lest I say something out of place and get attacked.

I suppose what I'm saying is that the elitists have problems, but they're really just giving a bad name to the real ones, who are getting more and more engrained into the rest of society because the face of society is changing to suit the style. They were there first, and they're distinguished for that, but everyone else may not necessarily be nerds for following. Sometimes, things just get trendy.

This elitist nerd sounds a lot like a hipster.
I hate hipsters.
Right there with you. The only thing that's worse is an elitist nerd that has no idea what he's talking about, but will spew nonsense until your ears can bear it no more. Sometimes it's okay to admit, "we'll I've never seen this, or played that, so I can't really pass judgment. Why don't you inform me about this subject so that I may become more knowledgeable about said subject."
People talk funny when I do voices for them in my head.

The elitists I'm talking about are the ones who can't seem to accept the "newfound" nerds. Let's take your Star Wars example. You like Star Wars, but are afraid to say anything to a fanboy (aka Star Wars elitist) for fear of being yelled at. I don't think that should happen.

The problem with elitism, especially for gamers, is that they scare away new gamers. What about the people who just get into games and start with more popular titles?

And I agree with the term nerd being generalized, but when I think of nerd, I think of one who does certain things in excess. Collecting model planes, sitting up all night to beat Bioshock or reading at least 2-3 books a week. I consider these things to be nerdy. Does that mean the person has to be a pimple faced outcast? Hell to the NO!

Elitist nerds, however, seem to believe that if you were popular and played sports then you're not a true nerd. It seems as though the elitist nerd praises the outcasts and degrades the people who try to cast the image of "the nerd" in a positive light. This bothers me.

There are quite a lot of people like that on the escapist

For example, in a thread of the worst game EVAR, most people will say will received and generally liked games. Instead of the worst game being some shovel ware or a film tie in game that is just trying to cash in on a films success

Or even worse are the ones who complain about very debatable things such; complaining about story, depth, immersion and other nonsense in games. Listen guys, games need gameplay, that is why games with such refined gameplay as Call of Duty sell so well. You can ***** and moan that it is stupid and you are an idiot but the fact is that it is a much more refined game, fast gameplay and no worrying about any other rubbish in games.
Also don't complain to me that "story can add to gameplay" I've played a lot of games in my time and most of the time when it does that it's gimmicky at best

Sounds like you need to care less about what other people think. Games, movies, music, etc are all subjective. People like things you dont and vice versa.

I fully agree. Elitism to me means someone who does everything they can to excel at everything. Most people you described (in my experience) aren't nerds and in fact i find nerds to be a lot more open about mainstream stuff. Probably because to be mainstream someone has to like it and it's probably the nerds. To me it seems you found someone you don't like and are calling them a nerd to either distance them from yourself or to insult them.

I messed this up a bit but it was a reply to one of the people in the top 3.

So I am not a nerd because I made JV soccer as a freshman? Even though I've read most of the Star Wars EU and can kinda be a prick about Star Wars facts? (Admiral Ackbar is dead. So is Chewie). No I'm a nerd. I'm also an elitist. I sure as hell don't hang around with stupid people. (Mild but still its elitism) But you're saying Elitist Nerds as one noun right? In that case those ones are pricks. But they're more prick than elitist or nerd. They're like the old gaurd, stuck in thier time as the world evolves

I understand what you are saying here, and yeah people like that will be super frustrating (not that I've met many if any). And for the most part, they are just being assholes. However, I like to think that at least some percentage of these "elitist nerds" can feel equally frustrated that the behavior that may have used to cause them ridicule are suddenly become acceptable to the masses. It's not excuse but I can at least understand that some people might think it's unfair and start treating others with same regard that they were.

[sub]they should suck it up though[/sub]

Compressed for out convienience.quote]

I'm not sure that doing those things you exampled - or that I exampled - are necessarily nerdy. I believe that those who are make their love of a thing nerdy by their own merit. The perception and the fanhood of it just gets to the point. Not everyone who ever went to a Star Trek convention was a Trekkie. I feel that if I did, or my folks did, then they wouldn't BE actual Nerdy folk.

Come to think of it, my eldest brother WAS at one... I'm fairly-certain that he's the least-likely one to be a nerd in our family, say. I myself have gone to conventions. I go there for the laughs and for good times. And good times are had by all. Well, not the elitists. They sorta' don't know HOW to have fun. The reason I used Star Wars as a reference is that some HAVE lynched others over some difference. Who wants that?

Yes, none of that should happen. Unfortunately, that's when things go too far. I'm just wary of nerd rage. It can strike at any time for not liking a perticular series!

I actually turned around in the movie and told the guy off. If the guy's got a problem, he should keep it to himself.

Yes. You could actually find some of these people on these forums. I'm not pointing anyone out, but it's not hard to find the people I speak of.

Oh you mean like those people that if I say "Halo has a bad story" they threaten to hunt me down, gut me, and then burn my remains?
