Im talking of course about the old handheld pokemon games, anyway heres my question. When you got your starter pokemon did you treat him like your no.1 pokemon; the one you always take with you no matter what? Or did you just treat it as a jumping off point to get a bunch of other different pokemon? Feel free to explain your answer.

my starter is always on the team, but not always my number 1, especially when i choose a Fire type starter, do you know how hard it is to find decent fire types in most Pokemon games?

Oh yeah, My parties have always have my starters. They end up having the version-specific Legendary as well.

My favorite type is water type (insta-kills a rock type and rock type are generally very powerful) so I would always pick whatever was the water type and used him as my main. My Empoleon on Platinum was my first level 100 because I would just train him on accident. I didn't only use him, I used other ones but I liked him the best. However, on SoulSilver, my Lugia, Feraligatr, and Ampharos were all on the same level while my other ones were trailing behind because they just weren't as useful... bad choice because if my 3 mains die, I'm screwed.

I usually(since back in the olden days of Pokemon EV was nonexistant) treated him as my go to guy for the rest of the game. Mostly because I stuck to only really training two pokemon, so they got tons of EXP and overleveled everything. Also, Venusaur FTW.

I only ditched my starter if he was a Water pokemon, because those things practically fall from the sky, and there are better ones. Not the Fire starter, though. After taking the Fire starter, I never put him away.

I almost always have a starter in my teams, although in my Pearl, I gave up my Infernape for a Blaziken I imported from Emerald (cloned of course).

When I was younger, I would use only my starter, and it was (and is) the Fire type. So I would have one really strong pokemon and five crappy ones. Now I actually build a team around my beloved Fire type starter, which keeps me from dying a dozen times per Gym Leader.
