Has anyone else seen it? I went Friday night and must say, it was a really good movie. For what could easily have been ?just another creature film,? it turned out to be a uniquely tense and suspenseful experience. The theater was absolutely silent the entire time; you couldn?t hear anyone chewing, whispering, I think I might have heard a person cough once. I was skeptical that they could pull off a film that was 95% silence, but they nailed it. All of the actors did an incredible job, even the children. Highly recommended.

Superb movie... also one of the worst movies to watch at the theater.
I saw it at a press screening and within the first 5 minutes some douchebag was screaming at someone who had shushed him. Worst part is that at the end of the screening he was making excuses about how he didn't know the movie was mostly silence.

Because otherwise it's okay to scream/insult others at a theater, of course.

Anyway, great movie. One of my favorite horror movies in recent memory, up there with Babadook, It Follows, The VVitch, Don't Breathe and It Comes at Night. I wanna describe it as indie horror but Michael Bay is the producer so...

We were fortunate that our everyone in our theater crowd was all on the same page; it was dead silent. My girlfriend even noticed as people were leaving that most of their food was uneaten because no one was eating.

Well, you lucked out. Watching it with critics sucked.
Also ordinarily I'm not a fan of "fuck yeah" kinds of endings but in this one it felt it was earned.

A movie with Michael Bay's name on it is actually good?!

Can we now stop using this guy in every movie debate/discussion?

Why you wouldn't prefer it if this was called A Loud Place?

The guy is producer, not really involved with the making of the film like direction or writing.

Its co-written and directed by John Krasinski (best known as Jim from The Office U.S.)

Also if it was done by Bay, we'd get an emphasis on people with tans, sexism, explosions, product placement, bad dialogue or tasteless jokes and other Bayisms people throw into the mix.

That's JIM from The Office.
Bay is an exec producer, that usually means he just put in money and had little to no creative input. Krasinski starred in Bay's Benghazi movie some years ago, this is probably just Bay being a friend. He's financed actor buddies before.

I quite liked it. I wouldn't have seen it but for a friend dragging me a midnight oh one showing on the day of release but am glad I went. I did have a few criticisms of the film where I think things could've been done better: the first act was a bit slow and not great. The subplot with the girl and the dad was a non-issue until the film was almost done. It suffers from the same issues many quirky horrors do where there's no real background or understanding of the world they inhabit. A few stylistic things regarding the lights, the river and waterfall and so on.

Other than some minor criticisms, I thought it was very clever. The tiny cast of four did a great job and the middle act was brilliant. The slow build with her pregnancy was great, the hearing aid was an interesting development that I was glad to see pay off at the end and the creatures were quite cool too; they reminded me a lot of the long-limbed, light-hating monsters from Dark Souls 2 (in No Man's Wharf area).

I don't know if it's worth the almost 100% ratings, I'd give it a good 75-80 ish, but it is well worth watching. Didn't realise until later that the couple on screen are real-life husband and wife too, a neat twist I think.

Agreed that the specific dad-daughter subplot could have been better fleshed out, but to be fair, the rest of the film did PLENTY to hit even the most cold soul in the ?parental instinct? soft spot; much more would have been damn-near overkill.

But I?d disagree that the lack of exposition as to the state of the world and how everything came about is something the film ?suffers? from; I, for one, found it to be one of the films strengths. Too many films (MOST, honestly) tell too much and it flattens what I feel serves best as a cutting edge of a good, immersive film, i.e.: knowing ?everything? cements my place as a spectator. I like some issues to be left to my imagination and find it easier to engage and empathize with the characters on screen and their immediate plight; the movie becomes ?about these four people? and less ?about this small part of this grandly terrible thing that happened.? But I guess it really boils down to the kind of film you?re trying to make and what the kind of story you?re trying to tell; not saying expositive films are inherently bad or that vaguery makes for inherently good films; I just feel vaguery really worked in this case.

Oh, now I want to know if this is one of those movies where the monsters are slain in the end... but I don't want to ruin the ending, as this is one of those RARE movies I may actually go see in theatre... but, I love it when the monsters win... sigh

A thread about a movie you don?t want spoiled is a dangerous place to be hanging about!

Too true, too true!

Glad to hear that horror isn't dead, though.

I thought it was tenser than it was scary but a great movie nonetheless.

^So much this; the film is more about ?people in horrifically tense situations? than it is ?moments of jump-scare horror? as evidence by the fact that (at least in my case; sorry, Johnny Novgorod) it brought a collection of a couple hundred strangers to collective dead silence for an hour and a half.

The effect this movie had on the audience was amazing. Early on the theater was filled with the usual shuffling, crunching and whispering. By the time the final act rolled rolled around the theater was dead silent. This movie was amazingly tense and just sucked you in. One of the best horror movies I've seen in years.

I don't really get the "the theater was silent" comments since, when I see a(ny) movie in theaters, the theater is *usually* silent while the movie plays since people are, you know, watching the movie. There are a few exceptions, like during the Avengers when The Hulk slammed Loki around and the crowd laughed a bit, but otherwise, I can enjoy the movie just fine without the crowd making noise. Maybe I've just been lucky in my theater outings?

Stay silent within the house,
Stay as quiet as a mouse.
Do not venture to world outside,
For that's where the monsters reside.

...

Feel free to sign the light,
For the monsters are bereft of sight.
But on silence life depends,
Make a peep, your flesh they'll rend.

...

I know silence does take its toll,
It's a prison for the mind and soul.
Hard to wake and hard to sleep,
For into dreams the nightmares creep.

...

Animals too mute their words,
No sound of dogs or songs of birds.
But still, we are the beasts' main prey,
Which we are without means to slay.

...

Can only hope we shall prevail,
As bodies and minds are assailed.
But members of the human race,
Must each find their own quiet place.

(Yes, I had some time on my hands, bite me.)

Yeah just saw this one and it was garbage. First off the premise of a near silent movie is a cheap way to get jump scares. A sneeze is startling if you haven't heard anything in 20mins. It felt like a hollow gimmick, like the original script was too generic and obvious, so they made the aliens(?) Very good at hearing, so we can make the cheap and obvious jump scares work better.

Also turns out the super amazing predators cant hear you near water and aren't immune to guns. So...yeah. world is what, 75% water and there are more guns than people. How did these things beat aircraft carriers? And helicopters? Drones? Fuck, how did the Marines fail? Yeah noise, sure. But they have guns. And shooting the monsters works perfectly fine.

Also white noise generators are a very common thing to prevent people from ease dropping on conversations. How did they not think of that first?

Here's the thing. This movie would have REALLY worked in 1920 rather than 2020. Modern technology is just too powerful to be beat by ear daemons. But 1920s would have worked.
