How the heck do you download mods? I've been trying to download the Star Wars Republic at War mod for my steam copy of Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. Every time I try to launch the installer it says the data is corrupted.

I'm not going to lie. I've never downloaded a mod before, and I have no idea what I'm doing. I've tried looking up how to do it, but most instructions seem to assume you're already familiar with modding. Are there any modding basics I need to know before I start?

It should work if the mod file is intact. Not sure where you got the file from (moddb?), but sometimes running as admin might help.

Redownload the mod.

If that doesnt work, redownload the game.

If that doesnt work, try reading the instructions.
Well, I've done 1 and 3. I guess I'll try re-downloading the game.

I did indeed get it from that site. How would one run as admin?

Right click the file and select the option near the top of the menu. There are usually user comments under each mod link too, so maybe others have had an issue with it?

It's different from game to game, Nexus Mod Manager is a program that allows for easy modding and it support a bunch of games. Not the game you're currently trying to mod but check it out if you plan on modding other games.

I'd recommend Thrawn's Revenge over Republic at War, personally... but if the installer is saying its corrupt, then you need to redownload it.
Then once you've installed it: In Steam Library right click on "Star Wars: Empire at War Gold" and click properties. Under the general tab, click on "set launch options". In the dialog box, put in "sweaw MODPATH=Mods\Republic_At_War" (without quotes).

Also make sure once installed and the launch option set, run Forces of Corruption when starting the game.

It depends on the game, man. You have to look at the file structure, and figure out what goes where, if there's no installer or straight-forward process.

Some mods are DOA and no one can get them to work. Having said that, maybe try Nexus? That client seems to do well with their moderation of mods.
