After playing a ravishing game of Metroid Other M a buddy had a thought. When the beautiful bounty hunter Samus goes into her morph ball why do we not hear screams of pain? Does the suit somehow change to accommodate her body safely? Is she crouching into the fetal position and the natural forces allow her to roll as such?

Were these questions answered at any point in the franchise history of games? If not i'm gonna have to consult the master of science himself Bill Nye to conduct a study on this.

It's Metroid. Who gives two shits?

If that doesn't stop your rampaging curiosity:

A wizard did it.

From the metroid Wikia:

"Exactly how it functions is unknown, but Prime concept art shows a large ball forming around Samus from her suit's material, then shrinking down to its miniature size, and in game, a core of energy is visible through the 'equator', indicating that Samus may transform into energy to fit in the smaller ball. On the other hand, Zero Mission design documents refer to the Chozo being capable of "unique transforming into a sphere," implying that the user's body is physically within the ball somehow."

In Prime, it's mentioned that the space pirates try to pull this off and fail rather spectacularly. In fact, I believe the words "mangled remains" were used at one point. So I just use the answer I use for all of these things: the Chozo were wizards.

I remember reading that Samus was just flexible enough to basically ball up, fetal-like, to fit in. In Prime, the ball is somewhat larger than it may seem, IIRC, 1 meter, which would be large enough for someone to squat into.

Huh? Just what kind of pic are you talking about?

I'm just gonna go with the generic answer:
A wizard did it.

EDIT:

In Metroid Prime there is actually some lore explaining how Space Pirates gave up trying to replicate that technology because of the test subjects having agonising crushing deaths.
