Right, so the serious feminism thread got me in mind to keep track of women in media who are kick-ass, as in being all about ass-kicking. Female badasses, heroes and villains and all in between, here and now in this thread. I could name a few, but let's hear from you, and we'll call this evidence of equal-opportunity badassary.

(NOTE: The point is not about exactly how they look. If they look fine while doing the ass-kicking and what-not, that's okay, but this is all about being impressive as hell. Oh, and bonus points for saying why they're cool.)

The first obvious choice is Sigourney Weaver. We, of course, all know how much of a name hers means from the Alien movies, depicting Ellen Ripley's character. However, she tends to be the go-to tough lady in other films. Whenever she shows up in ANY film, my first reaction is "Oh shit", and generally justified, although I have not seen all that she's been in.

Next?

See, I always liked Vasquez, just because of that one liner:

Hudson: 'Hey, Vasquez... have you ever been mistaken for a man?'
Vasquez: 'No, have you?!'

BURN!

OT:

In terms of actresses, I'll see your Sigourney Weaver and raise you Michelle Yeoh... the only Bond girl who could kick ass without James Bond around... (with the possible exception of Xenia Onatopp, but that's beside the point). Her performance in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon kind of says it all. Points to Zhang Zi-yi and all, but how many different weapons does she use? Open hand & sword... Michelle Yeoh? Twin sabres, spear, staff, sword, open hand & hook-blades.

Oh... and in before the inevitable flood (or trickle, but w/e) of people saying Mikasa Ackerman... =.=

Angela Basset's character Mace from the 1995 movie Strange Days is a pretty good example of badass while still being a believable female character.

Caitlin Moran.

I love her writing and she's just so cool.

I could list a hundred more but she's my favourite person right now.

Technically, I meant actors and characters depicting a role in a film or show, but your answer's an interpretation I didn't even think about, so coolness and carry on.

Oh, and INB4 Motoko Kusinagi from Ghost in the Shell.

She runs all the way to the hospital-.. well, she tries to anyway, to bring her sick mother a corn cob. If that doesn't kick ass I don't what does anymore.

Oh, and she also doesn't cry when she falls flat on her face.

Annie Leonhardt from Attack on Titan.

I'll tell you why too- because she trains daily, continuously in hand-to-hand.
But...but she doesn't. She actually completely ignores the hand to hand combat training because she says it's pointless to know hand to hand combat when they're fighting titans who are 100x their own size.

All the hand to hand combat that she knows was taught to her by her father years ago.

Ah~ that's what she said to Eren ;)
But she may of been lying. Later in the series...

When Annie as a titan is facing Eren as a titan too in the city... Eren suspects she was lying about fighting to be pointless. Annie usually looks bored but when fighting, she looks more alive then ever. Annie has an unknown history with her father sadly, but what we do know is that she's very good at it and has been using it even as a titan when she transforms for reasons... her motives are unclear.

But what we DO know is that she has lied several times. Especially when confronted by Armin when the three tried tricking her into going down in that escort mission. Annie refused fully aware that it was a trap. Then she kept putting off the facts like her killing Marco, how she stole his gear, why did she spare Armin, so on. Annie tries to lie but she can't outsmart the smartest dude Armin. So yeah she laughs and goes titan thus is captured at the end by Mikasa cutting her titan fingers off as she climbs the wall.
Yes, I know all that, but the point stands, while they were in training there's pretty much no way she could have snuck off by herself to train in hand to hand combat, and since she actively avoided participating in hand to hand combat training she therefore did not train daily or continuously.

Not related to that I finished SAC last night, Major Kusanagi. I still should watch 2nd Gig, but plenty badass already.

I'm sorry, but I called that one. Well, I guess some overlap is going to happen. I like how this thread's turning out. There's a bunch here I don't know.

And now, Ryouji Shiki from Kara No Kyouki, a girl who can cut open reality with a fricking knife.

Alyx Vance? Anyone? Most of the time she is heralded by trumpets and shoutings of half life. But for the sake of originality I will also name Hermione from HP cuz damn, she really does have the lead even when 'The Chosen One' tries his hand at leadership.

Yeah, Toph is awesome, as are essentially all the women in Avatar. Even Azula, despite the fact she's cray cray.

An example I like is Ty Lee. She's kind of a vain girly girl which might rub the wrong way, but she's possibly the best hand to hand combatant in the entire show.

On a semi-related nitpick, it irritates me when people ***** about the cast of Korra always getting their asses handed to them. All their Equalist opponents had learned Ty Lee's chi-blocking skills! Original Team Avatar had trouble with just one chi blocker!

The first I'll put down is The Sorceress from Kirikou and the Sorceress. She's like Maleficent (speaking of which...Maleficent should be on this list too), but topless and with an army of cute fetishes. She takes shit from no one.

The second, third and forth are The Triplets from Belleville Rendezvous. Septuagenarian, frog-eating, cabaret musicians who toss grenades at gangsters? Awesome.

- Lafiel from Crest of the Stars is a complex character, but along with Dutchess Spoor she really kicks arses )
- Jade from BGE
- Sarah Kerrigan, huh )
- Karan S'Jet, if to think for a second ;)
- Victoria Seras (I REFUSE to acknowledge Victoria being her surname!) closer to the ending...
- Nausicaa from the Valley of the Winds, San from Mononoke Hime
- Pretty much ALL female cast of Claymore done some ferocious asskicking )))
- Black Cat from 90-es Spiderman series

If we can leave visual medium:
- Amberley Vail
- Angua von Ubervald
- Honor Harrington in The Honor of the Queen

My bad.

My answer is so out of place in this thread.

Whatever, she is totally kick ass, I just didn't realise you literally meant women who physically kick asses.

Hmmmm.....if I had to pick three, then I would pick..

This one in a 'classic' sense:

This one in a 'stoic' sense:

And lastly, this one, in a 'completely bonkers sociopath' sense:
