"In an unprecedented move, the French European Parliament member assigned to monitor the treaty proceedings, Kader Arif, resigned in protest at the signings, and issued a strongly worded rebuke, saying that the EU was trying to have as little public debate on ACTA as possible, and that right-wing groups were trying to ram it into law with no oversight.

?This agreement might have major consequences on citizens' lives, and still, everything is being done to prevent the European Parliament from having its say in this matter. That is why today, as I release this report for which I was in charge, I want to send a strong signal and alert the public opinion about this unacceptable situation. I will not take part in this masquerade,? he said."

Also Polish MP's put on Guy Fawlks / Anonymous / V masks in protest

I'm just happy that people are getting their act together about this treaty, if a little late. It took them a while, but I can't blame people for not being too aware about it for a long time, as governments did try their best to keep it under wraps by negotiating it in secret without any public debate. The only reason anyone knew it was coming was due to leaks.

It's really thousands. Last time i checked it was close to 45.000 which is roughly 1/1000 of our whole nation.

Why ? Because we will accept and adjust to almost everything except one thing : taking our freedom away. Really, it's in our blood. We're natural born rebels.

Also : you wouldn't believe the sh*tstorm we have here now. We're very close to revoking our whole government, and no, i'm not joking.

I hope Germany will give a "No" so bad. Not only because, well, hell, I do live here after all, but also because that would send a strong message. For whatever reason, a lot of people seem to see Germany as the center of Europe, so a "no" could potentially do wonders.
It would be wonderful to have your support Mein Herr !

My thoughts exactly. As it stands, we're one of five countries still opposed to signing, and I hope it stays that way.
I actually called our MEP this morning and lodged a complaint about ACTA. Imagine my surprised delight when my little rant was met with understanding and enthusiasm! Maybe there's real hope after all.

As much pespect as I have for Poland's rebellious streak's, wanting to keep your freedoms is not something just Poland has a monopoly on. Someone said elsewhere that he could only get 18 people to turn up to a protest in Ireland on this. Is there something else along side the hatred of ACTA that is at work in Poland? You mentioned the hatred of the current government, could this amount in the protest, be about that, as well as ACTA. I just find it odd that only Poland has generated news worthy protests for something this international.

Is it again like SOPA where there was not much coverage on it and protests are having to be more grass roots?

Also those saying that there is nothing wrong with ACTA, where do you think the 3 strike rules so many countries are in the process of implementing came from?

I will strongly consider moving to a European country that does not sign this treaty.
Not because ACTA personally affects me, but because the country in question would represent a strong stance on supporting it's citizenry as opposed to the upper echelon of wealth.

Does anyone here actually know what kind of repercussions this ACTA thing will have on the average person? Or are we all just being overly cynical about the whole thing and saying 'this will destroy freedom!'

Hmmmmm...
Your instincts are right. :)

It's not exactly about ACTA. It's about the way it was introduced.
This and the fact that since WWII we didn't have a single, f*cking decade of peace, stability, prosperity and this strange thing called "democracy".

Let's just say that circumstances surrounding ACTA are the final nail to the coffin.

First time I'm hearing about it in the US, no major news networks would talk about SOPA either, because hey, they can't oppose it if they don't know about it, right? Hopefully an internet presence will rally support against this as well, though I suppose since it's more of a treaty it won't be squashed entirely, but instead in the countries that refused to sign.

Ashamed to find that, at least from Wikipedia's information, we had a hand in developing ACTA alongside Japan initially, "ACTA was first developed by Japan and the United States in 2006". I wish Europe luck in the matter however, not that that means much.

Yep, at least we have hope.

I really dont know what to expect. Germany seems to love piracy and web freedom, and then sometimes it doesnt, and I dont even know anymore. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Lets just hope Mr Schäuble stays inside the country borders and stay away from this thing, because I swear, that man seems to be doing everything within his power to piss me off.
Agreed. I really can't make heads or tails of this country sometimes; the political winds can change complete at the snap of someone's fingers.

And yes, Schäuble is the last guy we want weighing in on this matter. Seriously. -.-

I know I don't. My opposition comes from the fact that, unless I'm mistaken, ACTA represents the United States forcing the rest of the world to cow-tow to their interests and if that is indeed the case I'd much rather see the rest of the world tell the United States to fuck right off (possibly in those exact words), regardless of the circumstances.

It would be nice if the world governments could just stop this stuff.
The further these issues get pushed, the closer we'll get to a revolt, and quite frankly, I wouldn't much care if people started rebelling. We need to do something, this is getting ridiculous.

My thoughts exactly. So far i've heard nothing from the side against it, but from the other side i've heard it's just to stop counterfeit hardware in countries where copyright doesn't have as much grasp. Makes sense to me.
Same here, I need arguments against it rather than people just saying "it's bad", until I get a proper argument against I am staying neutral even though I detest this sort of underhand politics.

I just looked it up and it turns out that my country already signed it, didn't hear anything about it on the news, fuck.
