Ok this is odd, maybe someone can enlighten me.

I've been registered to this site for ages, I love this site. But I'd never used the forums before because I never really know what to say. So I thought I'd show everyone a little cover I did of the MGS2 theme (I'm a musician too). Yet the thread was frozen within minutes and everyone gunned for me....

I wouldn't call this advertising, I'm not exactly selling anything, I'm a total MGS nerd, and general keen gamer, and I just wanted to share something with people like minded, I wasn't pushing a product.

Can something as trivial as that be such a problem? I sincerely hope my first post doesn't get me kicked off the site, that would be messed up

It counts as self promotion. A lot of people will post their own videos on here in order to boost their following, and while it sounds like your intentions were harmless enough, the low post count, lack of avatar, and general structure of the post made it look like an advertisement.

PS: welcome to the escapist. Stay out of the basement.

PPS: you will not get banned. At most, you will get warned.

Welcome to the Escapist, I would recommend you become familiar with the forum rules by checking the stickies.

Pertaining to your posting of the MGS2 cover you did yes, it is against the rules of the Escapist to advertise your blogs, youtube videos, etc etc.

Our forums are a place to talk with like-minded people, not a place to advertise your blog, webpage, YouTube channel or commercial enterprise. Your profile has a place for such things, and that is where it should stay. If you fail to do this, you will automatically get a 1 month suspension.
This is why you received such a bile filled response from other posters. You made a mistake and your thread was locked. Nobody is holding any grudges against you, just consider it a friendly tap to keep you on the right course of avoiding the banhammer.

Once again, welcome. Try to stay out of the basement.

The mods think of it as self-promotion.

You could making a thread about it that has some other kind of discussion value though, like a "Video game music covers" thread.

The best you can do here is leave a link to your deviantart(?) page in your profile and make a thread tangentially related.

For example, How many amateur artists do gaming inspired work?

There you have a thread that provides an opportunity for other members to talk and discuss the topic and where you can also mention your page of, or even directly embed, the thing you did.

You won't be banned for a first time offense, just don't advertise again.

Edit: Ah, music not art, sorry. Just replace artist with musician etc.

When you signed up to the site way way back in 2010 you must have read the rules and the rules said no advertising, this covers from big companies like say... Microsoft deploying spambots to advertise thier next Xbox to you advertising your single video on Youtube that will probably get swamped under by videos of a cat riding a tortoise.

Just to hammer my point home im going to quote the rules page now.

Huh? Isn't this kinda like Miracle of Sound started his Escapist following? I mean it didn't FEEL like advertising, but boiling it down they pretty much did the same thing.

Thanks :)

And thanks for that explanation, I'll bear it in mind. Didn't realise how touchy it could be, I'll refrain from it in the future.

Regardless, I'm happy to be on the forum now :p

Regardless of your intentions, it was technically self-promotion. I don't really recommend trying it again, because you'll very likely get a warning. It's not about what's right, it's about what's legal.

..............But thats where all the awesomenessez happen.

Yeah, I dont think its directed at the few instances where someone is trying to illustrate what they have done. I think its there more to prevent people from abusing the forums and it basically becoming one big commercial for indie stuff.

Well, I can understand where the mods are coming from. I would be annoyed if every other thread was a link to a blog/channel/account for something.

On the other hand, it's always fun to see people showing their creative best! Bring it one my good sir!

Don't worry about it, I got sent 2 warnings for one post, they said it was 'advertising', I just asked if I should buy a game for X amount. However it's all good now. As long as you follow the rules it will be fine. Welcome to the escapist.

Hi! If you received a warning about advertising and don't think it's fair, there should be a link to an appeals form at the bottom of the message. It's much easier than making a thread about it, since those will just attract more trouble for you. Either that or you can always PM one of the mods about it as well. ^^ Although as someone else did already post:
