so, without naming the website (I am not a shameless plugger), my friend has one devoted to popular culture, and he is wondering how he might spread the word. You guys seem smart (some of you). Any ideas?

Thankyou for not shamelessly plugging it here. That would have just sucked (and gotten this thread locked).

I don't profess to be an advertising guru, but it seems to me that most things on the internet seem to spread by word of mouth or by people talking on places like forums - so look at doing those things first.

Without knowing much about the content of the site itself...

Put articles from it onto digg.com and other networking sites?

As Crazzee said, StumbleUpon is great if the site is good.

You may just want to buy ad space or try to spread it by word of mouth through your job, school, social gathering, etc. Get it flowing in your own community first.
