Okay, I have a question that I find somewhat peculiar.

After some time, I have now see and heard a lot of people going
"My parents are threating with taking away my pc" or Xbox or PS3, doesn't matter.

But what I find surprising is that most of these people are over 18!
Why would you still listen to your parents threats when you are that old?

Of cause you should still respect them, but why the hell would you respect them if they threaten you?

Also, I've noticed that most people I know who has this problem are American, that might have something to do with it? (I'm European)

So I guess my question is this: Why question is, why are people afraid of their parents threats when they are over 18?

Because they have no job and they live with their parents due to the current state of the economy, therefore giving the parents the power in the house?

Well parent are the authority in their house, be what ever age you like.
They can start to respect you as an adult and treat you as an equal, but they are parents and are incapable of doing so, they will always try to correct and improve their children.

To put some contrast on this, my dad is 50+ and whenever we go visit his parents they still try to school him on how to live his life, this usually ends in a shouting match... oh what nice visits those are.

So the age is really a non-factor, it's just parents, if you want freedom you better get some distance between you.

Mind I ask where you're from?

Personally I'm from Denmark, and I have never had problems with my parents,
nor have any of my friends... And we all spend quite a lot of time at our computers.

Nor have I ever seen my grandparents try to correct my parents :/

I see your point, but I can't really relate to it... Cultural difference?

Personally never had a problem with my parents, mainly because they know full well that if they took away my 360, my PS3 or my PC (All of which I've paid for out of my own pocket, I'd like to clarify) I'd just pick up a book or do something else, it wouldn't interfere with any of what I do.

At any rate, whilst I'm still living with my parents and lack a job due to living in the arse end of nowhere, I'm relatively free to do whatever the hell I please, my mum and step-dad look out for me, but I don't get anything imposed on me.
My dad, when he was still living here, tried his damn best to get me to do what he wanted, pretty much a staple of our weeks were our Sunday afternoon shouting matches after dinner, where he'd act like I do nothing around the house during the week, even though the majority of the household work was down to me and I did my damn best doing it.

He never liked the fact that I was a gamer as a child and went for the whole taking consoles away approach, not that it ever worked. I actually get treated as an equal now with my mum and step-dad around, sure, there are jokes about me being the bottom of the food chain, but it's all in good fun, I honestly can only think of one of my friends who had parents with incredibly draconian rules.

That is actually a good point, I guess cultural differences are quite a factor.
And if I remember correctly people in Denmark are one of the happiest in the world, I guess that makes the parents a little more mellow.

Oh I'm from... well you wont know it, small country next to Italy.

Surveys shows that, and really, I can't complain :D

But yer,I guess culture really has a a lot to do with it... I think I might bring this up at school...

My guess is that since these people are 18 and most likely not in university, they probably haven't experienced the growth in maturity and understanding of authority learned there. this would lead to a lack of the ability to realize that the authority and control over their lives their parents once had is fading, and will soon be gone.
