They've just announced a New Age of Empires! Ag4 of 4mpir4s!! As someone who still plays AoE 2 to this day, I'm excited to see what they do. But I'm also concerned that after AoE 3 they'll fuck it up again. What are your thoughts?

There is absolutely no substance to the announcement trailer, as per usual, but it seems to be implying that the game is going to be set over a bunch of eras and cultures. I'm a tad concerned that they're going to turn one of my beloved teenage franchises into a Empire:Earth/Civilisation remake, and thus they're going to simplify each age (for starters, how would units scale over that many "ages"? Surely a catapult from the bronze age is going to have a fraction of the range on screen of a 24 pounder from a colonial era?)

It's a shame Microsoft drops the ball so much when it comes to anything involving gaming on PC beyond the actual OS that runs them.

Yeah those two things makes it really hard to get excited for it. Dawn of war 3 and seems to indicate that relic has no idea why people like RTS since they combined the worse aspect of both dawn of war 1 and 2 while leaving there good aspect on the cutting floor, so AoE 4 might very well just take everything people didn't like about AoE 3 while throwing out the few improvement.

Weirdly enough there's an old thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/538.337441-Running-AoE-II-on-Vista] in the advice forum from a few years back with the same issue (AoE 2 not working on Vista).

The suggestions TL-DR is:

Run the AoE 2 application in XP compatibility mode (Right click on the .exe file, Properties -> Compatibility -> Click on the compatibility button and select Windows XP.

Turn of your antivirus, after disconnecting from the internet of course, and allow the game in your firewall. It's possible they are interfering with the game.

Reinstall Direct X9, maybe some older files needed are missing.

Hope that helps

I really liked age of empires 3. Not as much as age of mythology but I still enjoyed it a lot.

The original Age of empires was a bit unmanagable when I played it (no build queues at that time, those got added later) and still not really pleasantly controllable later. I've been told AoE II is the best one but I didn't play it, unlike the others. Honestly, I don't think I like RTS that much. I prefer a rather casual one with nice visuals like AoM or AoEIII to overly hardcore stuff so I doubt I'd like AoEII as much as the regular fans.

So yeah, if AoEIV sounds cool I'll check it out.
