Having just watched the new Alice in wonderland movie, I left with a large feeling of disappointment. Having watched the original animated version many times since its release I had come to regard it highly. So as I set out to watch the new one my expectations were quite high.
The story was not true to the original or the sequel Through the Looking Glass, however although it was true to the source material, I felt it did not have the same panache as the original.
Has anybody else thought this? Or have you watched the new one but no the old one?

I hated the story. It just didn't fit in with the Wonderland setting. The story should be like the animated version: Alice goes places and sees fucked up shit.

That's what Alice in Wonderland is all about. Fucked up shit. Not rebels fighting an oppressive queen. Just fucked up shit.

Sure, the film had some fucked up shit, but that's the thing. They were just moments of mindfuckery. The whole thing is supposed to be a mindfuckery that doesn't make sense.

Yes, in every aspect except the visuals.
I went to see Alice in Wonderland, what I got was Alice's Adventures in Middle Earth.

I was not very disappointed, but I had really low expectations. Amazing visuals, garbage story/dialogue. The original Alice in wonderland disney movie I cant even remember. I tried reading Through the looking glass at some point, but its one of the worst books I've ever tried to read, and one of two in my entire life I havent managed to finish because of boredom. The other one was Pride and Prejudice.

Alice in wonderland offered stupid characters, a string of random events not really related, a stupid metaphor for Alice's real life problems a soundtrack that didnt at ALL fit the quirky/crazy mood of the movie and a ton of silly invented words that served absolutely no purpose.

Language is an amazing thing, but making up words is not good writing (I feel the same way about the stupid original book). You want amazing literary genius read some Terry Pratchett.

Alice in wonderland is the first time I have EVER considered just going to sleep in the cinema. It engaged me that little. Terrible movie.

"Underworld"

It is called 'Alice in WONDERLAND' yet repeatedly they correct Alice that the place they are is actually called Underworld. More than that, it is actually a sequel to both AiW and Through The Looking Glass yet it is billed as simply Alice in Wonderland. That and every single character in the films was boring and annoying beyond belief.

yeah, I thought it was going to be shit and I was still underwhelmed. It was a short film but still felt way too damn long.

I didn't see it. I'll wait for it to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray and give it a rent.

But from what I've heard, they've tried to make a cohesive fantasy epic out of Alice and that's not really a good thing.

<color=purple> I think everyone is dwelling on the old animated version and relying on the comfort of their nostalgia. They are focusing too much on how much they loved the original. Honestly, I'd be upset if there was no change. I have yet to see the new movie, but I believe it can prove to be a great movie of its own. Anyone I've talked to that thought otherwise before watching the movie, seems to hate it. Just sayin.

The new one didn't live up to my high expectations so I can say I didn't like it. But there were a couple of things I liked and scenes I enjoyed so I didn't hate it.

I was, but it wasn't a terrible film, it was simply not great. It looked brilliant, and had a nice, creepy vibe to it. The story was a little uninspired as it was basically an hour and a half of everyone convincing Alice to fight and eventually she does.

Considering it had Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman, as well as Tim Burton as a director I was hoping for something a little more special. I recommend people watch it, but wait until it's on TV or available to rent or something.

This too:

Tim Burton has not made a good movie in a long time, no surprise it was poor.
Sweeny Todd was good.

Hahaha.

I was disappointed though, but I shouldn't have bothered because of that cinema abortion Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Planet of the Apes.

Haven't seen the new one, primarily because it will inevitably ruin all the good moments I had (and have, but this time with shrooms!) with the original Disney version.

The movie sucked bigtime, all right, but what really gets me is, WHY did Burton decide to f*ck up the story in the first place? "Alice in Wonderland" in its ORIGINAL form would have made the PERFECT script for him!

No because I wasn't expecting much. I went in expecting a less than good Tim Burton movie that tries too hard to be creepy and I got exactly what I was expecting. The visuals were amazing as per usual but the story didn't make much sense at all and I was confused leaving the theater. It was just... alright.

Maybe because there is about a million Alice in Wonderland movies? Go to IMDb and look up Alice in Wonderland and you'll find a bunch of results. And then there are movies just named Alice and then there are movies with completely different names... we've all heard the story. At least he tried something new.

I prefer the version with Gene Wilder as the mock turtle. But I can understand the reason they made the movie the way it is, audiences need some kind of plot to drive the narrative, in the TV version the plot was that Alice was nervous regarding here performance.

Seeing as this was a new Tim Burton movie, I went into it with incredibly low expectations so, the fact that it was somewhat decent suprised me and I actually kind of liked it.
