Am I not a gamer?

So i was bored enough to go kill some time on Omegle (random chat site) and one conversation turned to games and gaming, and discussion turned to Nintendo, i stated the fact that i don't like any of their newer games, and in particular SSB, and i was asked what games i normally play, so i said mostly shooters and some survival horror titles, and all of a sudden im not a gamer.

Stranger: you're not a gamer at all

All because i play mostly shooters and don't like any of Nintendos newer games.

I was wondering peoples opinion of this and whether or not anyone else has received this same sort of narrow mindedness when it comes to the definition of "gamer" or whether or not you are a gamer just cause you don't like one game or another

EDIT: no it didn't get to me, i posted this here as a point of discussion as i was interested as to why some people would think playing one genre of games makes someone a more of a gamer then someone who plays a different style of game? (of course we can exclude Zynga & facebook games etc)

I'm sorry but what "Stranger" said is BS. You game: Yes. Therefore I'd say you are a gamer. And I've never really suffered that kind of stuff. I mean amongst my friends I'm known as the biggest gamer so I've never suffered this. And I'd never say someone isn't a gamer just cuz of the games they play. I mean playing a game at all with pleasure means you're a gamer.

If you play games regularly as a hobby, you're a gamer. Simple as.

Unless you play anything made by Zynga, those are jobs, not games.

Saying that someone isn't a gamer for not playing a specific genre is like saying that a Pollock painting isn't art. It may be different that what you consider to be art, but it's art all the same. If you've gone as far as considering yourself a gamer, then odds are that you're a gamer.

Unfortunately, some people don't refer to gamers as "People that play games".
They're part of the Elitist group that think because you don't play and like every game and own every console and have no friends or contact with the outside world then you're not a gamer. Best thing to do is ignore them.

Someone who likes all the stuff that Nintendo is doing at the moment said you weren't a gamer? That's weird, normally it's the other way around.

Anyway, he's an idiot. You play what is possibly the biggest genre on the market right now (FPSs) so there's no logic at all.

Well I would say as long as you don't only play one game and enjoy playing games I would say your a gamer.

I suspect more people would say Nintendo games aren't "real games" (not my opinion) than First person Shooters aren't "real games". If it's a virtual activity where you control something to a goal, it's a game. I think that's pretty much it, if you play and enjoy them regularly you're a "Gamer". What more is there to it?

i don't play excessive amounts of MW2, and my steam screen name doesn't have a single character that isn't a standard letter

not someone who likes every 'good' game that has come out and has played it over 300 hours each and have unlocked every achievements and have every single console ever made by humanity including the ones that doesn't even exist anymore.

It's a matter of taste and you don't like Nintendo's newer games. I rather dislike some of nintendo's newer games with a few exceptions of course. I still consider myself a gamer.

my feelings weren't hurt as i was so shocked that other "gamers" out there are so narrow minded. i spose i should have expected it tho. As to call an Nintendo fanboy an elitist its an amusing notion.
