I've just been doing a lot of thinking lately. I feel like I'm one of the only people who actually listens to electronic music. I mean the sub genres that are outside of the realm of the popular genres (house,hip-hop,club music).

I'm into the really obscure genres such as IDM,D&B,Glitch,speedcore,ambient,8-bit(chiptunes),trance). I mean no matter where I go people give the weirdest looks and just don't know what to say.

I hate living in a time when music has become so robust, but only a few simple genres are what becomes popular. I mean we do live in a modern era where this stuff is supposed to be relevant to our time, but it seems like nobody here in America really gives a rats ass about electronic music.

Lastly, I'm a lover of instrumental music in general, but I do like when artist add in odd voices and vocals and just plain weird shit that makes me think "WOW!". On the whole I love that electronic music has unlimited potential with all the different genres available. You can make weird sounds and do extreme stuff that could never be done with a traditional instrument. I love the different atmospheres that this music can create Whether serious or more light hearted.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this. thanks!

Hmm, well I do have an interest in digging into martial industrial. I very much enjoy Triarii, and want to hear more of that kind of stuff. That's about where my interest in electronic music begins and ends, however, but it certainly isn't a popular sub-genre.

one of the few people?

few people?

oh lawd....

I too like electronic music of varying kinds...I'll admit most of the pure "club EDM" I really don't like, especially when the vocal track and the music just...don't do anything together

Avicii is of coarse an exception to both of these things (although he tends to be a little classier than pure club stuff) his Album True was wonderful

Glitch Mob were one of my absolute favorites...although their latest album was a bit of a letdown for me as it felt more like generic trailer fodder than their unique sound before

I also really like a fairly obscure genre I call "80's throwback music" which is basically exactly what it sounds like, Like Power Glove who did the sound track for Blood Dragon

[sub/]also you might want to be more forward with the topic in the title...otherwise your thread might get a premature sinking[/sub]

I don't suppose the OP (or whoever) could post an example or two of what they're talking about when they say "electronic music"?

Y'know, just for the benefit of non-hip old squares like myself.

I was almost thinking the same thing... until OP mentioned America...

OT: Okay... Do you mean the type of electronic music that's NOT mainstream? Otherwise, that's basically ALL I hear on the public radio stations near me...

At least the electronic music I listen to tend to be more independent-esque than the one's you would hear on those radio stations... In the meantime, does anyone listen to Savant?

I sometimes feel like I'm one of the only people that listens to japanese music. (not just anime songs, btw).

But of course, that'd be silly ;) if there's a 'popular' kind of music, then lots of people obviously listen to it! (but that doesn't mean your chances of meeting them are realistic!)

its a very diverse genre.....when you just say "eletctronic music" and nothing less specific

the europeans seem to do it better than the americans, I'll say that

Throw Neurofunk in there and you've got a solid 5th of my music library.

IDM? Drum&Bass? Glitch? Ambient? Trance?

These are obscure?

My mind was just blown. If the OP is correct than over half of my music library would be considered "hipster music", which, by corollary, would make me...

Oh gawd...

Please, anyone reading, stop fucking titling threads this way. It is the most annoying shit I have ever seen.

No. No, you are one of a great many people who actually listen to electronic music. Personally I have eclectic tastes that include most electronic music in various genres, but while I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the genre specifically, I know several people who are.

I enjoy this one, if only because of the irony.

But no, I generally don't enjoy it. I prefer music I can either sing along to or relax to. Electronic music is more for dancing, which I'm not really in to. Most of the songs I like are also tied to good memories I have, and electronic music isn't really good for that either.

I'm sorry about the title. I'm not always good at putting my thoughts together. I live in America. Not only that, but being African American makes it even harder for me. My culture isn't known for the more obscure genres of electronic music.

Most of the people I come across only listen to what's popular. My family is a part of that unfortunate reality. I'm really into the genres I mentioned because I don't dance and I've never been a fan of club culture. I've tried and raves and clubs just don't work for me.

I'm much more interested in multilayered complexity and I'm interested in the weird stuff that don't necessarily go together, but could. It's people like aphex twin that showed me that there are other people like myself that want the same things.

.
but electronic music and Hip Hop have a long and loving history, aspects of hip hop like "Trap" branch out into their own respective EDM genres

also unrelated but so much music of all kinds of genres is "electronic" nowdays (99% of pop for example)

not all stuff that falls under "electronic" is recognisalbe as the purer sub genres of EDM (electronic dance music) like trap, house, techno, dubstep, druma nd bass ect

a lot of the stuff I like isn't "pure" at all and when listed too I guess would come under "alternative"

I can't link but stuff like The Glitch Mob (though their latest album was a bit more generic), or an alternative act with vocals and everything like Nicki and the Dove or "pop" type stuff (Sweet Ophelia buy...I forget the artist..zella day or something)

I like what electronica that I've heard and I would say I'm a fan of the genre but what I hate about music in general is, the kinds of music I like can be sub-catagorized into one of a million different genres. It's easier to just say which tracks and/or bands you like instead of a genre because of how confusing it can get for me. I still can't understand what Dubstep is compared to other electronica despite numerous people explaining it to me while speaking very slowly and clearly. Visual aids were also used!

I think you'd like Nils Frahm. He combines instrumental music (mostly piano) with electronic music. Some of his stuff is pretty amazing:
Shit really starts ramping up up into awesomeness at around the 9:30 mark.
Might not be the same kind of stuff you're talking about though.

Well most people forgot about chiptunes. we were all listening to that stuff as kids, but didn't really recognize it. My NES,SNES, and Gameboy were fantastic sound machines. Hell, the genre has become a work of art for people that can recognize it. People always make me out to be a music snob which might be the case, but that's because I have a active interest in electronic music. It's just so expressive and it surprises me that people here can't see that.

I like stuff wth chip tune elements....but too much pure chip tunes and it feels "limited"...like it kind of always was

for a real gem look up "overworld theme" from Gargoyles Quest...

I agree with you. It sounds fantastic when it's expanded with acoustic instruments and vocals.

It's funny you should mention Aphex Twin because I remember seeing a commercial in the late 90s for Bank of America, which used Aphex Twin's Girl/Boy Song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCSrMEsaNAM] of all things (to the uninitiated: give it a listen). Believe it or not, here's the actual commercial [http://www.negativland.com/dumb/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/bofa1.flv].

Unfortunately, the guy who maintains that blog had something to say about it:

"I can remember being a little perturbed when I first saw these commercials. I always wanted to point out that some artists have sell out sometimes. In fact a lot of artists have to sell out in order to survive or maintain a lifestyle. Of course, would never do anything like that at least not that I know of. As for me personally at this time, I merely wanted to point this out, and I am neither for or against the commercial, although I have thought about it on and off for over 10 years!"

-Negativland.com [http://www.negativland.com/dumb/blog/archives/1531]

"Sell out"? Don't people want their favorite artists to make money? Yeah, music elitists are the original hipsters.

So yes, there are some people on these boards who listen to electronic music, but not as much as you I imagine. List some bands why don't you?

What's that? You are one of the few people who like a specific type of music that isn't mainstream? That's cute.

Sounds like me in 7th grade boasting about how brutal my taste in metal was. By high school I found Psyopus and the Berzerker. Still thought I was awesome and unique. Then I discovered the Black Metal scene... at that point I realized that I didn't know what I was talking about, decided to chill out, and stopped waving my dick around.

I don't know what the moral of my story is... why am I still here?
