So as most of you know Japan has had it pretty rough lately what with an earthquake, a tsunami, and some kind of radioactive meltdown happening in pretty quick succession. Hundreds of people are dead and towns have been destroyed. People at my school are all talking about it and debating whether or not we (the USA) should help Japan. But in the midst of all this, I find that I really don't care. I mean, I certinly don't want people to die and I don't wish anything bad on Japan (unlike some crazy people), but I don't really feel any sympathy towards people who I've never met and probably never will. Anyone else feel the same way, or am I just a sociopathic weirdo?

INB4:

"You're a horrible person."

"I hope you go die in a ditch somewhere."

Not my personal feelings, but I'm just saying. This is a pretty sensitive topic, and people will take this the wrong way.

I don't give a flying [word goes here] about Japan to be honest.
Why should I?
If it was America nuking them again or some kind of war or major economy crisis eventually leading to death, sure.
But this was bloody nature.

No you're not the only one. I don't really care either. Probably not a good idea to admit it considering the amount of Japanophiles on this site.

Well I guess I understand how it can be hard to feel empathy the Japanese citizens, who are only numbers to you, besides you can't really control whether or not you care about an issue, just like there isn't only one griefing process.

Why is it weird that you feel nothing towards people you do not know?

If I'm being perfectly honest I'm more excited than anything else.
Natural disasters tend to get that reaction from me.

EDIT: for reference I didn't even care for 9/11.
Just another instance of people dying.

Well, at least you're being genuine about it and not just trying to go along with everybody else because you don't want to sound like cold.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not easy to care about people you don't know, especially when we live in a world where it's so very difficult to do something even if you did care. I really wouldn't think it's too bad unless you were taking some kind of personal delight in the death and devastation.

What's happened is horrible, but I never care about the disasters in the world either. Like you said; "I don't really feel any sympathy towards people who I've never met and probably never will.".

Well I think there's 'not caring' and then there's 'indifference'.

I'm too disconnected from the whole thing to feel truly sad about what has happened, but it still sucks and I wish the best for those who have suffered. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it though.

I don't tend to care about most of these popular stories such as the 7/7 bombings and 9/11 as I'm detatched from them.

I can understand why you feel so disconnected from all of it, as it's happening halfway across the world.

It's why we have the CNN and BBC and such. They help bridge the gap, but it's still hard for those not directly affected to grasp the immensity of the situation.

However, I myself am very worried about the situation. You just happen to be different.

You are perfectly normal. The people of Japan are outside your monkeysphere [http://www.cracked.com/article_14990_what-monkeysphere.html]. Thus, you have no emotional connection to them and therefore don't really care about it.

I'm the same way, to be perfectly honest. It sucks for Japan, but aside from the minor inconvenience of not having my manga fix for a couple weeks, I couldn't care less.

You have a point, but it never really hurts to care.

Still, human lives is a sensitive topic

Its not like not caring about the suffering and death of people is unrelated to the fact they are japanese. The fact you dont care? Its a bit sick but i can deal with it. The fact you assume my issue will be that they are japanese? Pretty erm... (avoiding mod wrath) stupid. Its that they are PEOPLE. That was a pretty weird thing to say.

I might not give two craps that you were lying in a ditch with no limbs on fire, slowly dying as you melted like a candle. But going on the internet and saying "LOL I SAW THIS GUY ON FIRE AND DONT CARE ABOUT HIM!" Is a bit weird to be frank with you.

I do care that people are dying. I do care small infants and babies were drowned and entire communities ripped apart by this, did you see the videos of driving cars picked up and crushed?

Well, you have a point. I do care for these people, and wish the best for them, but I probably won't end up donating any money, unfortunately.

If it were closer to home, like the flight 90 incident in DC, I would be more likely to lend a hand.

It's unfortunate, sure, but it's mostly out of my hands, so I'm not really losing any sleep.

Well, no, it's perfectly normal.

Then again, going online and talking about it, not so much.

I mean, look at it this way. If you got testicle cancer right now I wouldn't give a crap. Your balls can painfully rot and eventually kill you and I couldn't care less. You could be in agonizing ball pain right now and I would only care about whether I want my toothpaste in spearmint breeze or arctic ice flavour in the next few minutes.

But if I sent you an email saying that... well, that would be kind of rude, wouldn't it?
Yeah, that's true. I just came to the Internet because I didn't feel comfortable talking to my friends about it. They really do care about what happened. Sorry if I being rude, I just didn't know how else to say it.
