I never really jump on the bandwagon when a new system comes out. Usually they're buggy and don't work properly. It's been a while now and the current generation seems to be running smoothly now, but I'm still without a "next-gen" system. I read reviews, see advertisements and hear people talking about all the latest and greatest games, and somehow I stay afloat in this new generation, but I still don't own a 360, Wii or PS3. My PC is in dire need of an upgrade, so I can't even play much on there. Just wondered if I'm the only one still claiming to be a "gamer" even though I don't have to tools of the trade.

The tools of the trade have little to do with being a gamer. It's just enjoying videogames more than the average citizen.

But yeah, you aren't the only one. I know a few people who just stuck with the PS2. They are still making games for it, after all.

I wait until there's a game I NEED to play

then I scrounge, and buy that system.

In the 360's case, it was Mass Effect.

and now I'm officially a 360 fanboy.

I am in the same boat as you, my friend. You could use some deodorant by the way. But yeah, you should go to your local small business game store and hang out, get to know the people, and mooch off of their systems.

As far as I'm concerned, if you like to play video games, you are a gamer. Don't get all caught up in labels. It's not a country club, it's something we do for personal enjoyment.

I have a Wii and it's fun, but I use it for the virtual console as much as for new games. I hear you about having a PC that needs an upgrade. My lapttop JUST manages to run the Orange Box games, and man Far Cry 2 looks good. So, I suppose I should just suck it and upgrade soon.

Anyway, welcome to the Escapist.

Many thanks, good sir, you would not believe the amount of discounts, system playtime, and all the late fees I don't get charged there.

I know what you mean. Personally I own a Wii, having gotten one as a gift a while back, yet the system I play on most nowadays would have to be the DS as opposed to any of the next gen systems.

I like to think of myself as a gamer, but I don't really equate that with being up to date on the latest hardware and software. But that's just me.

It's called gaming behind the curve.

My lineup:
Dreamcast
PS2
Xbox (purchased when they hit $60 at Gamestop, and modded to run XBMC)
PSP (my only current gen)
PC in need of upgrade (but isn't every PC in need of an upgrade, as far as gaming is concerned)

For consoles, the advantage is that used games are dirt cheap. Xbox games in particular are insanely cheap. Though some are more rare than others.
For PCs, the games are also cheap, and fully patched, and in cases of extreme rarity, well, that's not generally an obstacle. *cough*cough*

Complete strategy guides and walkthroughs are readily available for free on teh intarwebz.

The downside is that the online populations for such games as offer them are generally small to nonexistent.

Yeah, gaming behind the curve is awesome.

You're not the only one. I only upgrade something when it's required or when I really want something.
I bought a pc in 2000, I replaced it a year ago with this pc because I wanted to play some of my games with more than 20fps, but this pc, when I built it, was already outdated.(the newest hardware in it is the graphics card, a Radeon x1950pro)
The "tools" of a gamer are games and something to play those games on. It doesn't matter how old the games or system(s) are.

I wish I had the self-control of the guys above, but I'm the exact opposite. Every time a new console sashays its sweet little ass into the world, I REALLY believe the claims it is "revolutionary", and throw my not-so-hard-earned money at its voluptous microprocessors.

The only console system I ever had was a N64...

Now I have a (moderately) kickass gaming pc:
quad core 2.66GHz
3GB ddr3 ram
500GB hdd
G-F 8600 GT
22-inch samsung syncmaster

Next step will be getting a G-F 9800
Then a Wii (I am gay for link)

Yeah same more or less. Still got my PS2. Fortunatly i'm working now and plan to buy myself a 360 and some games and trade in alot of my PS2 games for store credit... yes I know gamestop is evil but teh darkside is sexy. I'll still keep my PS2 and a few games such as Z.O.E 2 (mostly cause it's already a used game I got at GS) and Okami, because it's awesome and I never finished.

The most advanced gaming system (apart from my PC which can run portal on the lowest settings) is my Gamecube. Or my DS, depends on how you rate "advanced"
But, I have a Wii on lay-by and will get it after the HSC.

I kid you not. I had no real ambitions for buying a 360.

I saw a couple ads for Mass Effect, saw it was a Bioware game released only on the 360.

a week later i traded in ALL but my favorite PS2 games, all my Xbox/Gamecube Games, and my Xbox/Gamecube, and shelled out money I didn't really have so that I could have a 360 and mass effect.

and I loved every minute of it.
