Am I the only person who doesn't like Black History Month?

I've never really enjoyed Black History Month. Being half african and raised by my single parent black mother, I was always encouraged to get involved with the culture. But for some reason every Black History Month a good majority of africans I know will use the sentence:
"I/We (or any other group terms) went through the slave trade."
It just really infuriates me how a 15 year old boy thinks that just because he great great grandfather went though frankly barbaric events he also went through them too.
It also annoys me that their aren't any history lessons based around any other cultures apart from black history month. (that i know of.) Yes, all cultures get celebrated in one way or another but most are done collectively. An entire month is given to Black people.
Although I do see that they deserve this month, don't you think it would be a good idea to let other cultures who have gone through slavery or even been wiped out completely have their few minutes of fame a year?
Yes it was racist, Yes it was terrible, Yes this is probably whites making up for what they did.
But just think... Samurais had their way of life destroyed after guns were legalized in Japan. Now they live on in the occasional crappy film. I think they deserve at least their own day if not a month or Norse Pagans... they got their religion condemned by Christianity and are no longer classed as a religion in the UK or Europe excluding their countries of origin (norway, denmark)
I know haters will hate but please do. I want to see your point of view.

Tip for Life: You're never the only person.

EDIT: (To add some sort of content to my post) I agree, Black History month is basically reverse racism. It, from what I've seen, does more harm than good.

I don't mind Black History month. What I do mind is some people telling me that I should feel sorry for slavery and that I as a white person bear some guilt. Half my family didn't even come over here until 1920, and the other half lived in the north. Furthermore, part of my family is Irish, and it's not as if THEY suffered anything ever in the states.

meh, no one cares about Black History month anyway, besides maybe afternoon talk shows with nothing else to report.

I'm still waiting for Asian History month, but no one cares about Asians in the US, unless they're talking about China being the next big threat >_>

Hooray for reverse racism, oh wait it could be a subtle hint at racism being "remember what your ancestors went through, because we can do it again" (I'm not racist it was just a thought) don't ask me how I thought of that I just did. I really don't think it should be a month long holiday a day would suffice, besides none of my black friends (yes I have those) even get why we have the holiday and don't really celebrate it either.

I agree wholeheartedly, Black History Month should no longer exist and should be replaced with something like 'Foreign Culture Month' which would be a month dedicated to finding out things about other cultures and creeds that you otherwise would not.

If it makes you feel any better, it is the shortest month of the year...

You don't have to particapate.

This. I'm French/Scottish, and nobody in my family line owned slaves, but people still tell me I should feel bad. Why? For something that I, nor anyone I'm related to, has ever done?

Where's Jewish History Month then? Slavery was quite some time ago, and we're talking people like "my grandmother's grandermother". There's still people living from the holocaust.

to be honest I feel black history month is racist just for the fact that being racist means treating one race differently than all the rest and well by giving them there own month ya you are in fact treating them differently which only further inforces people seeing differnt races rather than just people ... that and im tired of people telling me that every month is white history month you know what we learn about the history of the land not white people the LAND I didnt spend all elementary learning about natives to be told this >.>

Every culture, religion, "race" of people, or otherwise group of people that can classified as such has experienced great injustice The world is indifferent to us, people are always stepping all over each other. Some of these dedicated months have their uses in the pragmatic sense, but overall, I don't see why any group of people should have their suffering recognized over another.

Maybe we could have a "humanity's suffering" month, where we all recognize that everybody's life sucks. :p

i love black people. theyre awesome. i just dont feel the need to CELEBRATE them at any given time. and not just them, but EVERYONE. Asians, Hispanics, Russians, Polynesians, Arabs, everyone is awesome in their own right. and kinda idiotic too. you cant generalize race or ethnicity to anything anymore, because were basically all the same. we all steal, kill, cheat, beat our women, spread stds and drugs, yada yadayada. it just doesnt matter anymore.
