As the title states, I'm looking for bands or even solo rock-stars in metal and hard rock that preferably have a talented female vocalist, but at least have a notable and talented female member somewhere in the group. Yes, this may be sexist to ask. No, I don't want this to be a sexism thread even if it seems that way. It's just that when I stop to think about it, I can't come up with many females in rock unless it's soft rock or some pop / rock bastardization and their discography is composed almost entirely of relationship songs.

There are only three that come to mind when I think of females in hard rock or metal - Amy Lee from Evanescence, Elena Siegman from the Nazi Zombies songs, and I believe Joan Jett from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (I've only heard "I Love Rock and Roll" from her, but I think she counts). This kinda baffles me that I know so few great females in hard rock and beyond, as I'm positive that there are just as many female metalheads as male ones and thus logically there should be a fair amount of females in the actual industry. Female vocals can also be incredibly badass in a good rock song and can provide a completely different flavor, for a lack of a better term, to a song's style.

So who are some great females in rock that you know of? Feel free to post youtube vids on people you listen to. Indies are perfectly fine (even pony metal), as long as it isn't yourself of course. Like I mentioned earlier, I do NOT want this to be another thread on sexism; I just want some good examples of females in hard rock or metal as I'm certain that they must exist. Keep it civil everyone, and let's rock out.

Well, there are two all-female death metal bands that are considered legendary in the underground. Mythic and Derketa. With the obvious exception of Jo Bench (of Bolt Thrower fame), they're probably the first females to play death metal notably.

Heavy as all fucking hell, too.

Very classic, old-school crushing sound.

Edit: There's also the Finnish Anguished, who plays a disgusting, nasty and demented form of black metal. You may like it if you like early Burzum. I'm unsure whether I like it myself, I do appreciate it though.

The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the two Female lead singers Nightwish had.

I am really enjoying Royal Thunder. They are tour with a band I wanted to see and I heard a little snippet of there's, it was great. Investigating further I found that they have some great sounding stuff.

I'm not usually one for this light of rock but damn..her voice is addicting.
I cannot recommend them enough.
Oh and I guess I'm not going to the show anymore. I'm super bummed..

Marnie Stern plays a very frenetic sort of quasi-punk, but she uses tapping almost exclusively for a very different end result. Bit of an acquired taste, but some truly kickass songs.

Sleater-Kinney are pretty much the benchmark for female rock bands.

Alison Mosshart of the Dead Weather/the Kills is a very badass singer.

White Lung is 3/4 female and plays some pretty intense punk.

There are plenty of good females in rock bands, but not as many as there should be, for sure.

EDIT: Also Sleigh Bells. Sleigh Bells is loud as fuck

Is this a thread where I get to gush over After Forever? Hell fucking yes. Seriously, Floor Jansen is an incredible singer.

Anyway, here are some other metal bands I like that have a female singer.

There is no shortage of rock/metal bands with female vocalists, they are everywhere! I've lost count of bands where I see 3-4 men on the instruments and a female as vocalist. Nightwish is a popular example. In fact I have a growing suspicion that female vocalists are in heavy demand for rock/metal bands so they have a pretty face to put on the cover (and sing, I guess) and not look like generic metal band #8432106.

The problem is finding female guitarists, bassists and drummers. Don't get me wrong, there are a few and some who are even really good (as with all things)...but you really have to LOOK for them, you're not going to come across very many if you're just casually browsing through bands :S
One way to get an easy 10 million views on Youtube is by being a hot girl playing any rock/metal instrument, preferably guitar and preferably with some skill. Sheesh >_<

My personal favorites are Nightwish and Arch Enemy. The female vocalist of Arch Enemy is seriously one of her kind.

Well, White Zombie had a female bass player, Lordi has had multiple female keyboardists, and Electric Wizard now has a female guitarist. KMFDM has had female members as well. Then, there is of course Lita Ford, Girl School, Warlock, Genitorturers, and Holy Moses. If you want punk rock, there is Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Also, Wikipedia helps...

Outside of what the peeps here have already mentioned, I do have one that no one mentioned yet.

Kittie, and they are an all female metal band from Canada.

That's their most recent stuff, but I think they're just awesome. :D

Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy is the first one that comes to mind for me:

As for ones female-fronted rock and metal acts that I know exist but I'm not a particularly big fan of tyhere's also Doro, Laccuna Coil, Nightwish, Kittie, The Great Kat... and from my country Spiderbait, The Superjesus, Magic Dirt (all defunct now, I think, but will still have recordings and videos kicking around)

Nao from Maximum the Hormone (of death note opening and ending fame)
Meiju Enho & Emmi Silvennoinen, the keyboardists for Ensiferum

I think the only group with less representation would be the blacks. Seriously, outside of derrick green of Sepultura and Abasi Tosin from Animals as leaders, I cannot think of anyone.

Aye. I listened to one of their full-lengths not long ago, and enjoyed it (though it was too long!). I'm not usually into clean female vocals, but her's has this very cool, pagan-like quality to it. Very cool indeed.

There are quite a few out there actually. Aside from those that were already mentioned here's I few more I recall:

Alissa White-Gulz from Agonist
Anna Murphy from Eluveitie (Mainly a hurdy gurdy player, but also sings in quite a few songs)
Candice Clot from Eths (Though she recently left)
Simone Simons from Epica
Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation
Noora Louhimo from Battle Beast
Liv Kristine from Leaves' Eyes
Gunnhild Sundli from Gåte (Unfortunately now disbanded)

Too tired to remember more, so hope this will suffice.

Didn't Killswitch engage have a black singer for a bit? Plus I know Alice in Chains has a black vocalist. And tosin is awesome enough to count as like, 4 or 5 people.

I don't tend to pay much attention to who's actually in most bands outside my top 5 or 6... so I'd only notice female vocalists. Christina Scabbia and Angela Gossow spring to mind but that's it.

Julie Christmas, criminally underrated and overlooked.

I could rave for days, one of my favourite vocalists of all time. Can range from sweet to guttural to unique vocal inflections. Brutal imagery, imaginative lyricism and she could probably kick our arses. I love it.

Coincidentally one of her albums is my avatar.

Eh, she's pretty good and doesn't afraid of anything.

Can't say much more, since we want to keep this a sexist free envieroment.
