I wish I were joking. I'm apparently beginning to blend some bits of American grammar with British grammar... and he hates it. I got a paper that I wrote back today with marks all over the damned thing with one large comment down at the bottom:

"We don't use British grammar here."

It's strange. You'd think that the English... know a thing or two about the English language.

Any other Escapists have experiences like this?

He would not like me. I mix British in with a bit of fake German (like saying ze instead of the, and mein instead of my).

I wasn't aware there was much of a difference except for a few extra words and a few different spellings?

Well mixing two different grammars is always gunna piss someone off.
My Advice, if you're British, keep using proper English and tell him to shove it XD

There's some punctuation differences, too.

Well, he is an American English professor.... I mean, sure, it's a fucking spelling difference. But I guess I can understand his feelings. If he's teaching American English he'd want you to speak American English.

By the way, that whole post was under the assumption that he was teaching a subject called 'American English.' You may have meant that he was simply American and he was teaching English, if that's the case, then he's a little obsessive.

Wow. That's... yeah. Well, tell him we're sorry for misspelling the English language that Americans must've come up with.

Also, my Captcha has a word with an umlaut. This bugs me, 'cause I don't have a German/other language with umlaut privileges keyboard.

What abundance of Weapons-Grade Jackassery is this?

To be fair, you should stick to one or the other. But you shouldn't be getting penalised for picking "british" english (that still feels just as dirty to say as American English).

Pft. English, in its original form, started in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of England. Our 'British' English is, technically, just English.

Anyway I had a point here, somewhere. American English and British English don't have that many startling differences, so I can't think why your Prof. is picking them up. Maybe he hates the British. What have we ever done to him? |<

I've done that all the time; the problem may be that you're American, and it's much more obvious when you do it because the American lexicon has purposefully taken steps to remove itself from the original UK english. That doesn't mean your poor prof is right... he needs to accept that just because you live in the U.S. doesn't mean that you're somehow 'wrong' and should be marked down because you chose to use a different lexicon. That's just stupid.

Here in Canada, there's less of a difference... when I have a choice of language, I always go for UK over American english because it's more similar and has many of the same sayings and spellings.

Now, I consider myself a grammar Nazi, but this seems a bit excessive. I don't even know of any differences that would actually impair communication were they used like this...

This difference between spellings is confusing me and I think it is kind of pointless. I mean which way am I supposed to spell gray/grey?(in America)

Your in America being taught by an American English teacher.

So why would you use British grammar. Maybe if you're with friends or in Britain, but not in a academic paper!
Yes it sounded wrong, but your supposed to use proper grammar.

English seems to change a lot.

I personally hate the language...

Which is a shame because it is the only language I know... and maybe a little spanish, but i'm not exactly proud of a C grade in GCSE spanish.
