Oh how I pity the people who make statements like that, they don't last too long in these debates.

You must have fantastic luck, my friend.

Everyone here in my town is a fat fucking moron.
That, or you just have terrible luck. Or you live in Texas, do the people around you conceal pistols by chance?

Well... LA is known for being a more liberal thinking community. At least, most the stuff i hear about the place tend to lean toward that touchy-feely kind of people. It also has a large gay community, and so far I haven't met single douchebag of that bunch.

Where I live people are civil at first, but in general fit every stupid stereotype that you'll ever hear about Americans. It's like they enjoy the labels... fucking tools.

Every nation has its own stereo type becouse that is what it looks from the outside looking in. Yes, I belive that there is some truth behind stereo types, e.g. the Aussie Bogan there are plenty where i live, but there are also others that don't fit that stero type, but there are also lies behind them as well, like when one of the people from my school went to America and he repoted that not many Americans say "y'all" even if that its the stereo typical thing that us Aussie would belive and i also belive americans would also have some wrong stereo types for Australians.

What ever nation you come from, I garante you that there is a stereo type about your people and your ways

I live in Canada and visit the States once or twice a year to get together with family. I've found that Americans are generally very polite, perhaps even more than in my hometown (Toronto). On the fat issue though, I also noticed something a bit disturbing. It seemed that everywhere we went, there was always at least one very fat person. Sure, Canada has fat people too, but you don't see them as frequently as we did in the USA, and they also seemed to be fatter in general.

"2nd highest educational system" according to which study. I think you'll find that America is well behind.

Does the LA in your post stand for Los Angeles? That place is the shithole of California culture, even when compared to valley towns (some of which seceded from the Union during the Civil War!).
I don't think California was ours during the Civil War

All stereotypes are only slightly true, it's really half and half while there are people who fall into the stereotypes but there is a good amount of people who don't too.

Gotta disagree on one point there. Your educational system is nowhere near second highest. It's a fair chunk lower than the UK's and that's not second highest.
Yeah, last I heard the US was like 14th or something, Australia was like 7th or 5th IIRC, and UK was like 6th, I'd need to check again.

The only bit of the US i've been to is Texas and Arkansas. As i used public transport a lot I met a lot of people. There were lots of fat people and I was asked how many times i'd met the queen amongst other ludicrous questions.

BUT they were all lovely and very, very friendly. Although pretty racist and i got the impression if i'd been Mexican or black i wouldn't have had such a warm welcome. The 'impolite' thing comes from them being less formal i think.

Soooo.... yeah a bit true i guess imho.

Now as a fat American I really can't argue that point and I can tell you that there is some merit to the rude part. I will admit that I'm not the most polite person but I pale in comparison to some of the asshats I know, although living in Washington state I know that it is a lot different then say the east coast. we're much more laid back on the west coast. However I think that the idea that Americans are all a bunch of idiot is rather unfair to those of us who actually take it upon our self to make sure we know whats going on.

It's kind of an insult in the same way that the idea that French people are smelly is to those few Frenchmen who care about their hygiene or in the same way the idea that all British peoples teeth look like they have never once been in the presence of florid is to those few who have been to the dentist within recent memory.

Ok I was joking with that last bit, not all Frenchmen smell and not all Brits have teeth that belong in the mouth of a Neanderthal... but those Eastern Europeans and their track suits. >_<

So I just got back from a vacation in LA and I don't understand some of the stereotypes centred around Americans. I imagine most of us have heard these stereotypes, and I myself have been guilty of making them from time to time. But in the week I was there, I didn't see an abnormally high number of fat people. I didn't think anyone I talked to was stupid. Everyone seemed polite and there were few people who were especially inconsiderate. I didn't notice a higher number of any of those types of people in the US than anywhere else.

So are these stereotypes just untrue? Because I've known people who would swear that they are, and insist that every stereotype is accurate. Did I just have an unusually pleasant experience in the States or is are people in California just a breed apart from their countrymen? Please Escapists, enlighten me.
Well califorians are uummmm let's be nice and and say "diffent" so i don't lose a chance at my nero bage *drools* than most of us americans but no, we aren't stupid or fat just the minority who are happen to be EXTREMLY vocal.

(No offense to calforians intened, most of my family gets mad if i bad-mouth califorina)
