Hi guys,

A friend of mine is trying to find much loved American TV shows. Something that is seen as an American Institution, held dear, much loved sort of thing. So far all we have managed to come up with is Gilligans Island.....

Any input would greatly be appreciated!! Thanks

The first one that comes to mind is I Love Lucy. Any TV series that was on the air in the U.S. for a really long time will fit that description.

The Simpsons
Gunsmoke
All In The Family
Twilight Zone
MASH

Just to name a few.

Not certain if there's an age (of the show) threshold here, but Seinfeld is a pretty quintessential sitcom.

MASH and the Simpsons comes to mind. The Simpsons because we, as American's, have decided it will never die, for our amusement (Though it may soon anyway), and MASH... well, MASH holds records for being watched by the highest percentage of TVs during its original run, and its still extremely popular to this day (Admittedly by the older crowd, but I know a lot of people my age as well [28] that love it too).

Over the generations, different Americans have held "dear" different shows for different reasons. I mean what you're looking for is so vague that one could simply point to the evolution of American television over the decades.

Burns and Allen
Danny Thomas
I Love Lucy
Happy Days
Mary Tyler Moore
All in the Family
Good Times
The Jeffersons
Laugh In
Ed Sullivan
Johnny Carson
Saturday Night Live
Daily Show
