I've been bothered for a long time as to why I never really liked any Halo game. Until other good shooters came out on the xbox, Halo was kind of my fix for shooting unquestionably bad people in the face (and I don't give a hoot about xbox live until somebody can get every twelve year old in the world to put a sock in it). But even on the first play through the campaign I got the feeling that I'd heard this all before.

Recently it hit me: Humanity, once a proud interstellar empire now reduced to fighting tooth and nail for every inch of space against a horde of alien fanatics. The only remaining hope for Humanity; a tiny group of armour-clad supermen (or women) selected at a young age for extensive biological and cybernetic rebuilding along with the best training courses available to man and extensive psychological training so that they know no fear and are prepared to be sent in to the most hopeless combat zones determined to emerge victorious. During this story a foul alien force that is inimical to all other life forms is discovered and it is necessary to make incredible sacrifices to turn away even one tiny prong of their assault on the galaxy.

Anybody who has even the slightest grounding in Warhammer 40000 lore should be able to see the parallels that can be drawn here. Aside from the (or women) comment, the Spartan program basically churns out Space Marines, just with extra added pussy. The covenant is pretty much an amalgamation of most of the Alien species in 40k but are closest to the Tau in their religious fanaticism, caste system and their alliance of several alien species. The flood are essentially Tyranids, yes Tyranids are more insectile compared to the flood's resemblance to zombies, but both have a life-form amongst their ranks that is designed to turn their enemies into recruits; the Flood's 'Infection form' and the Tyranid's Genestealers.

So there you have it. My reason why Halo just doesn't float my boat.

So in essence, the reason the Halo franchise never really gripped you is that it felt too derivative and generic? You won't really hear me arguing those points, but isn't that just what everyone who criticizes Halo points out?

Halo never really reminded me of 40K. It did remind me of Aliens, particularly when the marines were onscreen, but then just about every sci-fi shooter takes something from that film.

Have you ever heard of the movies called Aliens and Predator? Game developers do love to just shamelessly "homage" their favourite influences, it's a problem, for sure. But it normallly isn't something that always ruins the games and I'm sure that Games Workshop are as also guilty of it.

And "churns out Space Marines with added pussy" is the most unpleasant sentence fragment I have read for some time. GG.

I don't like Halo multiplayer because my character is too slow and clunky. I like Unreal Tournament's movements, more fast paced and 'feels' like there's more skill involved.
