as i was watching Avatar on sunday,i realized something. the only way the na'vi had the sort of civilization that they had was solely due to the fact that their world was so lush.....

now if they were on a more earth like planet (or one more arid) they would have had more advanced tech, because of more pressure to advance....

anyway they would have also had a much different view of nature had pandora been a more arid less friendly place for life... like earth

escapists this is a odd question but do you agree?

To go off topic, did you first check to see that no other threads like this are still active?

Now for On-Topic:
You make a valid point. I haven't seen the film, but jungle tribes usually have very little by way of technology, and in some cases, clothing.

I think the Na'vi turned out the way they did because James Cameron decided it as such. T_T

Typically speaking, if sentient life is going to evolve and survive anywhere, it's going to adapt to wherever it plans on living. Just because something lives in the arid desert doesn't mean it's going to have to depend on technology; they could just learn how to eat sand or light or something. Not everything has to be humanoid.

Well, yeah; the Na'vi had no need to evolve technology, so they didn't. It's all about finding ecological niches.

If it's ain't broke don't fix it and all that jazz.

Oh and "analizing" has a "y" in it.

not even humans had pressure to advance, they just naturally evolved.
So i guess the Na'vi as well would've some day been kind of like humans, but maybe not as much, because of the physical connection to nature they had.

I still haven't seen this movie, and I basically know the storyline from the amount of threads on it. Thanks for lsaving £10 to go see it dudes :')

OT: I kinda agree. Their culture seems to be about respecting the Earth though. So even if they had the chance to modernise, I doubt they would. Then again, entirely different species, so who knows?

It's not unthinkable that the Na'vi would eventually develop more advanced technology no matter what their habitat is, but since they have the ability to literally link their minds to every living thing, including a sort of 'planet-mind', they'd probably be a lot more careful with how their actions affect the rest of 'nature', not just as a somewhat abstract idea but as something living they can communicate with on a very intimate level. This doesn't explain their rather warlike tribal nature (after all, they're hunters, they're more than willing to fight and kill for what's theirs, and while violent conflicts between tribes aren't specifically mentioned, it doesn't take a lot of reading-between-the-lines to figure out that it's probably not that uncommon), but that's just for the sake of the story and not a direct consequence of their natural development (it wouldn't be the same movie if the Na'vi were a bunch of peaceniks).

On a biological level, I think there's even less point in discussing this, because the Na'vi probably wouldn't have developed the way they did if they really lived in a lush jungle. I admit I don't know much about biology so correct me if I'm wrong, but big tall creatures like them don't seem to be made for thick jungle vegetation. They seem to be made for living on the plains and steppes.

Placing them on another world would have changed pretty much nothing about them. Placing them in another story or in the hands of a different director would.

So, in conclusion, if you think about it, if the Pandorans existed on the earth, they probably would have been the exact same.
The might have been the same at first, but as with the examples you gave they most likely would be subjecated by more warlike cultures.

forget it,... i forgot to think about the connecting thing..... that would certainly change things.... but i am over analyzing this just a bit......... so forget it

edit: okay, but my original thought is that they only had the civilization they had because their region was so lush, thats all if it wasn't so lush they would have to be nomads or a different form of tribal society.... it is because the region in which they live is so lush that they are able to stay in a single place.... not because they have any peculiar connection to nature though that is part of it.... a major part of it.... a almost plot necessity part of it along with the carbon skeletons ( which i believe are only their to justify a na'vi taking more than one bullet to the chest thereby leading to cool action scenes) but nether the less a RULE of COOL applies there so i wont get into that too deep( ironic because i now have an entire paragraph on that subject:)....

but to the point i was originally trying to make.. the na'vi's civilization is only there due to the very very lush conditions found in their enviroment
