... I will learn to drive. Yes, I'm sick of taking the bus, and having to be driven to places. I'm just sick of it. I wanna be car-independent. Car indie.

But my question is, is it hard to learn to drive? I don't think it is. In fact how hard can it be?
Also, how long does it take to learn? A year maybe?
Can you also suggest a good starter's car. I want something cheap and reliable.

Thanks in advance!

I actually had the same exact questions. My neighbor is in driver's ed for nine hours a day and he's almost done...it's been through almost the entire summer. But I guess it depends on HOW you learn.

Driving's really not all that bad, so long as you keep your head cool and don't panic. You should really check out some driving classes with hands on experience if any are available. May seem tedious as hell, but I definitely learned a lot from taking classes. Also, cheaper insurance if you've taken a class.

Its all about the person you are, for me driving is quite simple while to others it seems like brain surgery. You'll know when you get behind the wheel for the first time.

Practice makes perfect. Just find a nice rural area where there aren't to many people and just drive around.

I didn't think it was hard at all. I practically taught myself. It's a few basic things, and you just have to get used to how the other drivers are where you live. I'd say the other drivers are the only hard part, but that kinda depends.

It was actually really easy to learn to drive the only problems I had were parking.
And I'd start with an SUV or a truck because once you learn how to drive something big driving a car is a lot easier.

it is not particularly hard to learn, particularly on an automatic. Worry about learning manual after you have the basics down on an automatic transmission.

It is suggested that you spend about 30 hours behind the wheel with a supervisor before you start driving on your own, and it will take several years before you are sufficiently experienced to take you out of the category of "high crash risk" but it's really not hard. a few weeks of practice and you'll be well off, and on your way.

as far as cars, japanese cars tend to rate very high on reliability - Mazdas, hondas and the like.

I drive a new model ford which is quite nice, and cheap to fix, but the car itself was pricey. older american cars (80's, 90's) you should probably avoid.

german cars (VW) are reliable enough, but tend to cost a small fortune to maintain and repair.

driving is ridiculously difficult to learn (legally) where i live ( BC, Canada ).

have to do a written exam for learners permit ( can only drive with someone 25+ with 5+ years exp. and cant drive from midnight to 6am)

then have to do a road test a YEAR later for the Novice permit ( cant have more than 1 passenger, and can't have more than 0% blood alcohol)

then after 2 more YEARS you can do another road test to get the unrestricted licence

everything but the learners expires after 5 years, and you have to get it renewed. for novice you have to do the whole fucking thing again and for unrestricted you just pay some money and leave

So depending on where you live, it may be difficult

It took me 4 months to learn how to drive. I procrastinated on taking my Drivers test though.

I would recommend a compact car as your starter vehicle. Compact cars are easy to maneuver in, generally use less gas than large sedans and give you less of a headache when you are looking for parking spots.

If you want to learn stick (standard), make sure your first car is a standard. You won't get spoiled by learning in an automatic, like I did.

Practise, practise, practise! I find it easy but like anything, you will get good eventually if you practise like a maniac.

If you need examples on how not to drive, look up "Canada's Worst Driver" and watch a few episodes.

Good luck on becoming an independent driver like the rest of us!

I've gotten behind the car once. As a gamer, I got the controls instantly, it's just the habits you need to put yourself in that are the problem. Checking over your shoulder and all that. I don't have that, but I can drive the fuck out of that car. Fun to scare mom that way.

You probably picked up all the stuff you need to know just by watching others drive. The only real learing curve is getting manual transmission down to a reflex, once thats done the rules of the road will come flooding back from memory or common sense and seem like second nature. If this is the case with you it shouldn't take more than a few months of till you can take the test, hell, I've seen people go on those intensive driving courses for a couple weeks and pass their test just over a month after starting. Don't worry about it and have fun, best of luck.
