Many people claim I hate anime. Many people believe that I'm just a xenophobic prick who cannot enjoy something that doesn't have a fat bastard eating an apple pie and shooting all the brown people because I'm a fucking American. Many people think I'm a model railroad enthusiast who cannot survive without gritty, dark and edgy realism. I cannot deny their claims.

Nah. Thing is, I really really, REALLY like anime. The art style is pretty, the characters are very expressive, and it has a lot of potential to tell stories that literally just cannot be done with live action. That's been my problem with it though. Most anime I've seen use the fact that they aren't confined by the rules of reality to openly flaunt it in ways that don't make any goddamn sense. That, and the cultural difference between Japan and me, a hard-talkin', two-fisted American, means that what I find incredibly creepy and sociopathic, they find charming. Now, I often find myself wondering if I'm alone in this thought process. Maybe I am just a xenophobe, so I dislike it.

But that doesn't explain why Code Geass, Boondocks, Elfen Lied, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Trigun, Ouran High School Host Club, and Berserk are still among my most-cited examples of good storytelling. Frankly, I don't trust reviewers of any sort, so I turn to you Escapists. I wanna hear your opinion on this medium of creative endeavor and toss out your opinions so we may all better ourselves and the world we live in by expanding our horizons.

(FLAME BAIT: Soul Eater, Hellsing Ultimate, Haruhi, High School of the Dead, and Higurashi ain't that great in my opinion.
Soul Eater: As a son of divorced parents, I find Maka offensive. And frankly, I'm more disappointed than angry. It could have been such a brilliant satire and parody of all the biggest tropes in anime, but failed and decided to go for angsty drama.
Hellsing: This had the problem of being Trigun, but boring. Alucard was a terrible main character, and the show could have been fucking amazing if they had just thrown his red-coat, excessively large pistol-wielding ass out of the whole story and let every other character take over for him.
Haruhi: Pseudo-philosophical stupidity and an unlikable ***** for the main character who reminds me a bit too much of the girls at my school for me to laugh at since she's never shown in an ironic light, which is how you present a main character who's a prick.
High School of the Dead: Objectifies women to a rather insane degree, no good characters, and it completely shoots itself in the foot later. It's just tits and zombies and gore and douchebag characters being douchebags.
Higurashi: There's a line I have to draw in the sand when it comes to the idea of fucked up stuff. I got physically ill watching this.

EDIT: I'm looking for a specific anime. To give you an idea of my tastes, I enjoyed the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, the Tolkein books, Jurassic Park, Chronicle, Watchmen, The Ronin, The Invisible Man, Dracula, The Wolfman, and Dragon Age Origins.

You want anything in particular or just a general thing?

As a general thing I love anime to a stupid degree. Anime is the first medium to make me cry. Saying that I always take manga over it. I am mainly a fan shoujo manga/anime but I do like some shounen stuff too.

My favourite anime is defiantly Ouran High School Host Club, I love the idea of a main character that is just uninterested that all the stuff around her but just gets sucked in. The manga is much better because it goes a lot further than the anime, seriously the anime stops at, like the 5 volume of 18. Haruhi's character arc is much more in depth and her relationship with Tamaki is properly explored, also the twins become much fuller characters with complex personalities. I should stop now otherwise I wont stop

Second favourite is K-On! yet again I could get very involved about each of the characters but I wont.

About your flame bait:
I haven't read enough Soul Eater to give a good opinion
I like Hellsing Ultimate because I enjoy nazis getting killed brutally
Haruhi is harder, I see where you say Haruhi is unlikable but the hints at a deeper more complex relationship with Kyon interested me
Can't argue with you with highschool of the dead but I just think the idea of someone actually getting off to killing zombies was really funny and I like Rei
I don't know the last one

I look for the same thing in anime that I look for in any other pieces of media: Great characters and/or an interesting setting.

I'm shocked that you wouldn't like Soul Eater for that reason. I thought that Maka and her relationship with her father was about spot-on with what it's like with a lot of divorced parents and their kids but to each his own...

My own list:
-Trigun
-Soul Eater
-High School of the Dead (The fan-service is almost unbearable but the setting is cool enough that I'll let it go)
-Cowboy Bebop
-Gunslinger Girl

In my opinion, each of these embodies what I stated above for requirements: either great characters, a great story, or both.

Ahhh looking at your likes you have have good taste. If you have not read Berserk yet I highly recommend it since it is much better than the anime counterpart. I find people often confuse taste with quality. For instance I watch arrow on tv but I would not for the life of me call it a quality show, sure I find it entertaining and like it but that doesn't mean it is a well made show.

I highly recommend Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Not the OAV, but the new anime.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=14445

The OAV isn't bad, but I just suggest you avoid it. It covers part 3, Stardust Crusaders, which is considered the best part by many Jojo fans. It'll spoil the preceding parts obviously, and the OAV left out a lot of fights and characters from the manga, so I'd wait until the new anime covers it, as its been following the manga closely so far(its still on part 1, Phantom Blood. Should be done in a few more episodes though).

If there are 2 words the can describe JJBA(well, parts 1-3 anyway), I'd say its MANLY and FABULOUS. Seriously.

Parts 1 and 2 can be likened towards Fist of the North Star, part 3 onwards is its own thing.

Also most of the character's names are taken from pop culture. An example is one of the 2 main characters in Phantom Blood, Dio [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dio_%28band%29] Brando [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlon_Brando].

Definitely give it a shot.

I suggest one (Or two I guess) that will make you cry the manliest of tears!
Clannad and Clannad After Story is in my top 10 favourite anime of all time.

I have many more I could suggest but I'm at school (College or whatever) and all my favourite anime file is at home...

That's the one I can remember at the top of my head.

Oh also Lovely Complex...that one is great.

In the newer releases I would say Little Busters and Sword Art Online. :D

-Soul Eater was ok during it's run, I liked the art style and animation. Holds the record for shittiest ending in anime.

-I haven't seen Hellsing: Ultimate, but I have seen the original tv series which was ok.

-Haruhi is flippin' awesome. Watch the movie, it might change your opinion on the series.

-Highschool of the Dead is about the dumbest form of entertainment. But entertainment nonetheless. Just switch your brain off.

- How far did you get into Higurashi? There were maybe one or two scenes that twisted my stomach upside down, but it was bearable for the most part. The conclusion in season two has left me satisfied for days.
As far as recommendations go, I always say Death Note, as this was the first anime I've seen and I absolutely loved it. Mainstream or not :p

If you want to bawl your eyes out, watch Clannad & Clannad After Story. If you wonder about your peculiar case of "ani-xenophobia", try this out.

Bakemonogatari is for you if you like black humour and a crazy visual style bordering on the weird. Goddamn amazing, this is.

The best anime ever is Steins;Gate. That is simple fact. The setting, the plot, and above all, the characters, they just work so well. It is brilliant.

As for your flame bait, well...

Soul Eater) Yeah, I hated this, too. Not for the same reason you did. The characters really annoyed me, and that it looks interesting but it ended up being generic shounen,

Hellsing) I liked Hellsing Ultimate for the same reason I like Gurren Lagann, it's so ridiculous, over-the-top, violent, and campy that I can't help but enjoy it.

Haruhi} I don't find Haruhi nearly as unlikable as some other people do, and I don't see what's so philosophical about it. It's just a slice of life comedy that when you look at it closely has a surprisingly complicated story. I admit, this one took a while to really grow on me.

Highschool of the Dead) Yeah, there's a lot of fanservice, but it's ecchi, and one of the more entertaining ones. I still like it for just a simple fun anime. My biggest complaint, actually, is that for a zombie show the violence was far too tame.

Higurashi) I love it when I first saw it, but that love died down a bit. I like the story, and I have no problem with the violence (I've seen worse. (Although that nail scene still gets to me)) , but there are some really, really silly moments.

Also, while I love PSG, I wouldn't say it's an example of "good storytelling"

Now to add my own flame bait:
Elfen Lied)
Loved it when I first saw it, now I'm starting to see more and more of the problems. It wants to be a deep, dark, and mature psychological anime, but really it's more childish. I get what it's trying to say, but the execution is terrible. There's a lot of awkward ecchi -harem moments that kill any mood they were going for, then switches to extremely cartoon-ish violence that, because they're playing pretty music, obviously means something. Then you have the ending, which makes no logical sense in context to what happened. The manga is better, but not by much. Still has unnecessary fanservice and goofy antics. Still has useless characters. Still relies too much on it's violence to get it's message across. And still has a really, really stupid ending.
I don't hate it, I still have a level of respect for it, and there are still stuff I like. I like Lucy, and they do go into her character and backstory, at least, but it just doesn't hold up altogether.

Penguin Drum)
I still have a tough time coming up with the words to explain why I hate this show so damn much. It's one of the most pretentious, incoherent, unfocused piece of bullshit I've seen (And I'm an EVA fan). It's an example of a story having too much plot, so much that it still ends with far too many plot holes. The characters are unrelatable, doing/saying things that no human being would do/say, speaking in such poetic, philosophical bullshit, even when they're kids. The style, while it looks pretty, is far too repetitive, repeating entire sequences over and over again. It was such a pain to sit through. I'm not a fan of the idea of fate or destiny to begin with, but as long as it's understated I can deal with it, but this anime plays that idea up to a sickening degree, to the point where characters are literally using it as an excuse to do terrible shit. And people LOVED this anime. I have not heard a single person who hated it, at least not to the same degree I do. I'm not gonna say you're wrong for liking it, though. It's just that I have so many problems with it.
Also, the child broiler was a really, really stupid idea.

That's about all that comes to mind at the moment.

Try Darker than Black. I just finished Season 1 the other day and it's pretty damned good. I will warn you that you need to be a bit involved in order to understand the full story. This is not an anime where you can skip around willy-nilly during the important segments. My only gripe was that Season 2 wasn't as great as Season 1. S2 is good, just not the good that S1 was.

Flame-bait responses are here! I can only respond to Soul Eater though; I haven't watched the others.

I saw the anime Soul Eater. Then, I read manga Soul Eater. The manga kicks the anime's ass to oblivion. Soul Eater works more as a manga with interesting art than an anime with interesting art, if you get what I mean.

EDIT- Want a good anime example? Do yourself a favor and watch Akira. NOW. That, is a good example of what anime can be all about.

My List:

Angel Beats
Ghost In the Shell
Evangelion
Gundam 00
Elfen Lied
OutLaw Star
Gundam 08th MS Team (OVA series)
Code Geass
Summer Wars (movie)
School Rumble

I would say Angel Beats is the most necessary to see off this list. That series really doesn't get enough love.

Well you mentioned Code Geass, and I was gonna say that. I suppose Rurouni Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop are some basic examples of pretty good anime. I'm not to big into Anime myself but I really enjoy those.

HEY GAIZ!
Has anybody heard of Kaiba? Hm? Oh no, not that doofus from Yugo-Oh!
I mean this...
Literally no one has heard of this, and it's quite hard to find. Surreal animation and art, very emotional, and just very original. While nearly all anime gives me no reaction or their atempts at emotion fall flat, this actually stirs something within me.
Also...
For once an anime that portrays samurai as they were, violent and blinded by honor. Plus it's very artsy.
But yeah, I dont hate anime, it's just sad to see a lot not try, or good pieces are hidden under a generic pile. Also I agree with you on the animes you listed, honestly Haruhi is one of the few things I consider overrated, plus it's just not good.
But before I go, now I know that a lot wont like this anime but it, in my opiion, has one of the best soundtracks of all mediums...

I watched Kaiba :D Rate it an 8. You're the first one I see on a forum that has watched it also.
Not suprising, nobody seems to know what it is, which is too bad. But yeah, I saw most of the episodes though I had to watch some in spanish to continue before I gave up. Still meaning to finish it but I love it man.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention Tekkon Kinkreet, so mind blowingly amazing I swear.
Also here's a short anime film that I thought was cool, was shown on Liquid TV back then...

Some animes are sweet. You can usually tell if something is going to be your "taste" because they have fairly specific styles. If you have questions about something specific, just watch a little and see if it's your thing or not.

I would just recommend the obvious:

-Cowboy Bebop - Movie and tv show
-Dragonball & Z
-Akira (stylish, but a very strange story)
-Spirited Away
-Lupin the 3rd - Castle of Cagliostro

I hated the TV series, they took Kouta Hirano's amazing manga and completly missed the point. The OVA is much closer to the manga, and I also think the OP also missed the point of it; Alucard indeed is the lest deep character on the series and still an amazing main character because it's not about characters, but archeotypes and ideas, about humanity and monsters, war and madness.

Anyway, for current anime I would go with One Piece. It is by far the best shonen on air and easily one of the best 3 in history.

If you want seinen however, i would reccomend to read rather than watch. Soil for example is an amazing ongoing horror manga.

All you're going to get from these people are the shows they liked. Their own personal top 10's, their bumbled pitches for their own pet shows, as opposed to any real recommendation. When you ask for handouts, you're just gonna get handouts.

If you really want to enjoy something, work to find it yourself. I and many pour over dozens of new shows ever year to find something worth watching. I have abandoned and forgotten more anime than you can even name. And in the end I've seen comparatively little (In 2012, I've only finished 3 shows, and have several more on backlog). But what I stuck with, I enjoyed.

If you want to go fishing for what anime has to offer in another man's catch, you should try Boku no Pico.

It's pretty much the best show you deserve.
