Pretty fun game, text based. Spoof on pretty much all anime, the anime scene, and other sci-fi/fantasy geekiness.
Think Kingdom of Loathing, http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/ , but for anime.
You don't have to pay (unless you want to), pretty devoted community, and frequent updates.
Edit: now with my game sig. If this violates something, I'll remove it. Purpose behind it was to let community know of a game I enjoy since I'm new and haven't seen a thread of suggested free games.

I'd also suggest Ikariam http://www.ikariam.org/ or Ogame http://www.ogame.org/ , but I've seen actual threads for them already on here.
Ikariam and Ogame are both a Civilization type game, with a large population of players and large alliances. Ikariam is set in an Ancient Greek setting, while Ogame is sci-fi.
