I know this is a topic that pops up about 15 times a month, but I've been to all of those forums and everyone who posts in them happen to have very bad taste in anime (to me at least.) I'm going on a trip of sorts soon and I'm bringing my computer, this trip happens to be taking me to a home with no internet access. I need a few series on my hard-drive to keep me entertained.
If anyone can recommend me an anime that ISN'T any thing like Naruto, Soul Eater, Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Death Note, Etc. Etc.
Just throw out some good ones, engaging stories are always nice. :)
Please and thank you, for putting up with yet another Anime Request topic.

Birdy: The Mighty, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Desert Punk, all really good ones with great story. Especially the first three.

Case Closed was really good as i recall. Oh and Gunslinger Girl. Ooh one more just remembered Ikki Tousen (I only watch it for the fighting...honest!) and Dears (I only watch it for the...story) and Samurai Champloo is one of my favorites as well as Afro Samurai.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is my favorite, and really good.
Blue Exorcist was licenced the same company- Aniplex, and was also good in my opinion.

Gunslinger Girl.
I didn't think anyone else had bothered to watch that. o.o
Lol you'd be quite surprised.

OT: I would recommend something like Clannad, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gurren Lagann, Angel Beats, Black Butler, and many others. But in all honestly I'm not quite sure what type of anime you are looking for lol.

U no liek Fullmetal Alchemist?

OT: Try Gurren Lagann. It's a hilarious deconstruction of mecha and generic anime cliches.
Spice and Wolf is brilliant, too. It make medieval European economics and trade exciting and awesome.

Just a quick note; almost half of the series people will recommend you are generally stupid/"I Just Don't Care" affairs and not as smart as they want to be. However, there are four series (and a couple more I won't mention) that I feel shouldn't be ignored when they eventually do come up. Please note that I would love to explain each of these series, but I've already did that about 5-or-more times, all of which resulted in a paragraph for each anime, with my most recent ramblings being recorded over here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.317256-What-Smart-Anime-are-there-apart-from-Death-Note?page=5#12917866]. For now I'll just give you names;

#1. Baccano!
#2. Durarara!!
#3. Now And Then, Here And There
#4. Serial Experiments Lain

Trust me, they are better than 95% of the anime that gets thrown out today and most of them won't make you question why you're watching them.

Not to shit on your anime preferences or anything, but the last 4 episodes of that were terrible. Which is a shame because the rest of the series was so good. So watch this, but skip the ending.

Actually, I can agree with that. The ending was kinda bad...

elfen lied if your looking for an intriguing story that will simultaneously make you flip out, arakawa under the bridge is hilarious and random, and it may be old but ranma 1/2 is still a classic.

United States
The Place of Promise of Our Early Days (I can never say it right, so google it)
Karas (Both Prophesy and Revelation)
Gundam (there are over 20 of them be tween 1979 and now)
Xamed: Lost Memories
The Sky Crawlers
Vampire hunter D: Blood Lust

Avoid Like the Plague:

Sekiray (it makes High School of the Dead look tame when it comes to T&A)

Vampire Wars (How to not make an anime

Peach Girl (If you don't get a good rage after that, nothing will)

Noir, Madlax, Angel Beats, Clannad, Kanon (there're 2 series of Kanon that were based around the same game. get the one that's 24 episodes and came out in 2006. much better.), Ghost in the Shell, Scrapped Princess, Stellvia, Ruroni Kenshin/Samurai X, Peacemaker Kurogane, Midori Days, Mahoromatic (be forwarned that this anime is full of ecchi, bath scenes, boob humor, and just plain boobs... but the story and characters are great.), Samurai Champloo, Gunslinger Girl, Karas, Elfen Lied, Soul Taker, Black Cat, Burst Angel, Martian Successor Nadesico, Excel Saga, Tower of Druaga....

ok, getting sick of naming things. this is a substantial list, anyway.

Baka no test no shoukanjuu. Best anime I've ever seen in my life.

I mostly watch Harem, Romance, Ecchi, comedy anime's.

I've dabbled in Naruto, hated it. Dabbled in Bleach, I liked it, but didn't follow it through.

The only long running anime I've ever followed to the end was Dragonball. Loved that anime.

Another anime request thread? Bring it on! I'm not sure what you've seen, but I'm not a particularly big shounen fan either, so at least our tastes might overlap. Here's some of my favorite series, OVAs, and movies:

- Akira //Friend of bike gang leader in Neo-Tokyo manifests psychokinetic powers. Shitstorm ensues.
- Cowboy BeBop //Really poor bounty hunters act really cool in yakuza plot IN SPAAAAACE~
- Eden of the East //Guy wakes up naked in front of the White House with a gun and a cell phone. He's understandably rather confused.
- Garzey's Wing
- Ghost in the Shell //Introspection and gunfights in the cyberpunk future: the movie.
- Interstella 5555 //Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto decided to make an anime.
- Legend of the Galactic Heroes //In the ambiguous ambiguousness of the future, there is only war. And lots of politics and character drama.
- Memories of Phantasm //Charismatic characters act charismatically and have flashy magical duels. Only recommended if you're a Touhou fan.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion //Some 14 year old is told to go save the world piloting a robot he's never seen before. Clinical depression ensues.
- Planetes //Salarymen IN SPAAAAAACE~
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica //Two middle school girls are offered a wish for fighting witches by a cute animal. Horrible things ensue.
