After a conversation with a friend of mine I realised that I don't actually own that much music, and as a heavy metal lover I should really look up more bands, and as I'm incredibly lazy and do little other than screw up my pc and game when I'm at home I would appreciate it if you guys pointed me in the direction of some great heavy metal.

Also to add extra discussion value, how would you define the genre of heavy metal?

I prefer symphonic metal, myself. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, and Kamelot are on the front lines of my metal repertoire. I also have a few Dragonforce songs, as well. If you haven't already checked out Dragonforce, look up Through the Fire and the Flames for a good taste of what they do. Soldiers of the Wastelands is my favorite from them, however.

I've heard Dragonforce be described as "hyper metal," and I think it's rather fitting.

I've kind of been out of the metal genre for about a year or so now (I've been listening to more punk than anything), but I can definitely lead you in the right direction.

The Dillinger Escape Plan is an amazing band.

Don't know if they count, but System of a Down (and the solo career of frontman Serj Tankian) might be worth checking out.

(Just not anything off Mezmerize/Hypnotize. B.Y.O.B. is not 'teh gr3at3st song EVAR')

Judas Priest
Machine Head
Saxon
Alestorm
Pantera
Sepultura
Rage Against The Machine
Rammstein
Sabaton
Nevermore
Nightwish

Lacuna Coil
Warrel Dane
Delain

I'd define it by giving you a copy of British Steel by Judas Priest.

As for lots of metal for you, look at my Last.fm profile [http://www.last.fm/user/Cpt_Oblivious], it's filled with metal and punk of all varieties. Plus I'm too lazy to type out the majority of 480 artists.

I've heard drangonforce, and didn't really like them all that much, but I have got a kemelot album, and I will be sure to check the rest of those bands out.

I'm just going to do what I always do: point you in the direction of Electric Wizard and Sleep. Too lazy to post youtube links.

Well. I personally don't like the majority of their first album, but you might as well give it a try.
And Steal This Album! is mostly just as good as Toxicity, it's just their last two (which involved a bit too much influence from guitarist Daron) that were poorer.

I love aluminum, steel, and a few others...

That music style that stole the name from my favorite group of elements is pretty lame though. Needs some good singers (not screamers) that don't sound like Dio or Lamb of God.

I like Metallica (Pre St. Anger of course).

Nu metal is not metal.
Ah, I was wondering how long it would take before someone decided to not contribute anything and instead just criticize other sub-genres.

Anyway my favorites include:

Dream Theater
Disturbed
Avenged Sevenfold
System of a Down
Symphony X
Edguy
Killswitch Engage
Tool
Angra
Avantasia
Andromeda
Masterplan

And many more, those are just the ones that stand out for me.

Might want to check out some of the bands I mentioned if you have an interest in the genre and just don't like the screaming. Also, if you don't like screaming then try some progressive or power metal.

Metal subgenres are hard to define, I think. But If I had to I'd say I listen to Black, Doom, Death, Prog, Heavy and Classic Metals.

My list rules, I think.

Anthrax
Mastodon
Turbowolf
Avenged Sevenfold
Lamb Of God
Kyuss
Machine Head
Devildriver

I can't bloody stand most death metal, symphonic metal, black metal and the like. It's just not for me.

Oh man, you have no idea how much I'd like to sit here for hours just compiling a ridiculous list of all the various Metal bands I'd consider worth your time, along with examples of each [footnote]Because actually providing music for you to listen to is way more helpful than just tossing a list of names at someone, especially someone who has asked for those names because they are too lazy to go do research, heh.[/footnote], but that would take all day and I sadly do not have the luxury of sitting here to compile such a resource (no matter how much I really want to).

So I will take the lazy way out while still being helpful: Here are some links to 'reviews' I have penned about various albums from bands I would have put on that list, had I sat down and created it - this has the advantage of requiring almost no additional work on my part while still providing you with all sorts of background information and selected tracks to listen to, whee!

All right, good deed of the day accomplished, off I go!

I have three levels of metal I like.

First: hard rock almost going into heavy metal like Mastodon

Second: Getting harder with Three Inches of Blood

Third: Full out with Cannibal Corspe (mit Evil Dead) and Behemoth
