Any of you wanting an old game really badly, but you can just never seem to get it?

Recently, I've been searching for some old classic games to buy, as at the moment I; want something new to play, have little disposable income and want to try different genres that I've not previously explored. So I've been scouring the internet, reading reviews and checking prices, to find the best games for the lowest cost, which will generally be old games that have had a lot of time to depreciate in value. Case in point; a couple of months ago I managed to get Resident Evil 4 for about £7 in the UK (roughly $11) and it was amazing!

However there are some games that I, in general, just want to play, but can't due to either it's rarity or ridiculously high price. For example, I really really really want Shadow Of The Colossus, Ico and Final Fantasy VII. Games of the past that I missed out on and really want to enjoy (especially SOTC), but cost way more than I'm willing to pay for games that came out years ago - or for game at all! For example, getting SOTC new on Amazon.co.uk, would cost at least £50 ($77) or I could get it used at £30 ($46). This is similar for the other two, Ico is £64 ($98) new and FFVII is £50 ($77). I really want these games, but either I don't have enough money, or I'm just not willing to pay that kind of money on a game.

My question to the Escapist is this; Have you ever encountered similar instances when you want to get an old game really badly, but it's never quite within your reach (or in this case, price range)?

Dead Rising.

It's an 18 and I'm 17. So I can't buy it myself.

Whenever I happen to have my dad around I can't afford it though.

God damn it I want Dead Rising...

I had this with FFVII. To be honest I wanted to see what all the fuss was about but wasn't willing to pay £50 for it. Besides there are a bunch of new releases about to come out that I would rather spend my limited income on.

Oh, when you said old game, I was thinking like Red Baron, or TIE Fighter, or Kings Quest V. Ancient Games.

I have a strange personality. If I'm wanting something bad enough, I'm always willing to make sacrifices to get it. Like right now, I'm almost completely spartan to afford car parts for my Chevelle.

There's a lot of games I want to play, but are just not available at all.
The worst part is that they're available on sites like Abandonia, which I find are great archives for obscure old games, but I just can't download them. They're not available for me legally, but they're right there, begging to be played. Its torture.

I like playing the retro classics like heretic, half-life etc. So i have searched so long for system shock 1 and 2.
I'm not sure I've ever heard Half-Life referred to as a "retro classic"...

Hell yeah! Do you know how hard it is to find SNES games where I live?
Seriously, Zelda: A Link to the Past is the TOP SELLING SNES GAME OF ALL TIME, and I can't find a single copy ANYWHERE! RAAAAAAGE!

Sometimes I wish that The Escapist had some kind of game trading program, that would be awesome!

I was really wanting to play Oddworld Strangers Wrath, and then lo and behold, they're going to remake it for psn. I also really want to try Silent Hills 2 through 4. And Space Station Silicon Valley for N64 as well as Blood Harvest. I've never gotten through any of the original Turoks and they both hold a certain fascination. Oh, and GTA 2 on the Dreamcast because I think it was the first with multiple radio stations. Never got around to Shenmue 2, but it didn't seem worth it when they weren't going to finish the series. Oh and D2 on the Dreamcast that had the tentacle rape scene.

And Earthbound. I forgot about Earthbound. You know, Nintendo could put out Earthbound on limited release on the virtual console for a month, charge 2000 points for it, and I would still buy it. They won't do it, though. Cowards.

It's not that old, but Paper Mario TTYD. I lost the disc a while ago and I've been REALLY wanting to play it. Maybe I'll buy it again when I pick up Reach, if they have it.

A while back I wanted Ico, but I couldn't find it in any stores and online copies were too expensive. Then I saw that it was available to borrow from my local library! True story.

System Shock 2, ever since I swapped to Vista. I was PISSED. It got so bad that I eventually tried torrenting (*gasp*), but even that didn't work. Looks like I'll never get to play it again...

That's where emulators come in handy. If a PS1 game is incredibly hard to find, download it and run it on ePSXe - if you spend $80 getting a PS1 game that's $80 you can't spend on a current game release. I'm sure Square Enix would prefer someone buy Final Fantasy XIII now rather than Final Fantasy VII.

Ico, it just costs too much.

But I already played it when it came out, so i don't miss it that bad but I do have a hankering to play it again.

Metal Gear Solid 4? As a huge fan of the series, I have yet to get it...and it kills me inside.

I also wanna find a copy of Sarge's War.

I have yet to find a legal copy of Arcanum and Planescape: Torment that's below, say, 60 euros and in a language I can actually understand.

I'd love to have them sitting on my shelves...*sigh*

A new KoTOR for me (I've gone though 2 copies) would be around £70. Yeah...
Haven't you heard? It's a couple euros/pounds on Steam. Go get it tiger.

For some odd reason KotOR2 isn't on it. Ah well, got that anyway.

So because the copies of those games on Abandonia are technically pirated you won't get them? Or is your computer not happy with the old games?
